Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. Paul, I fully endorse Rick's comments and unless your lens has been under fungal attack for a long time, I think you will find that it will clean up very successfully. You should also bear in mind that a small amount of visible etching will not necessarily be detrimental to performance. The optics on the 17mm/f4 were 'matched' on assembly, hence the only available spare being the complete optical unit. If by chance you found a replacement front element (very unlikely), you would probably find the performance far worse than the original 'marked' unit. To try and prevent this, you would have to follow the original set up procedure - fitting correctly dimensioned spacers etc.

Hi Paul: I would have the lens cleaned immediately. Fungus growth will cause irreparable harm to a lens surface, but it takes time. If you have just recently noticed it, there is a good chance that you do not yet have permanent damage .... IF you get it cleaned before it has a chance to get worse. After it has been cleaned, keep a particularly close eye on this lens so that you can get it cleaned again should the fungus come back. I would not advise replacing the front element unless yours does turn out to be damaged. While a lens with a swapped element will probably perform acceptably, it may not be as good as the original because there may have been some selective matching of elements in production to maximize performance.

I recently discovered that my wonderful FD 17mm/f4 lens has fungus on the front element. I took it to a repair service who explained they would attempt to clean the fungus, but if it had penetrated the lens coating they would not be able to successfully clean the lens.

I called the Canon parts department, only to find that the entire lens assembly was the only way they sold replacement glass for this lens. They were out of stock and all parts for FD lenses have been discontinued. In fact, they reported that Canon Factory Service is no longer servicing FD lenses at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might seek a repair or replacement of the front glass of this lens? Maybe there's a good repair service somehwere that might have the lens assembly.

Please reply directly by e-mail. Thanks in advance for any information you might provide.

The Canon repair manuals are broken down into common sections, specific repair information on certain lenses and parts diagrams/lists. So that I can send you the correct info, please indicate the fault/suspect problem and also if you are familiar with repairs to Canon FD optics. The common repair sections are large documents.

There is no specific repair info/data on the 135/3.5 FDn, only aperture set up dimensions.

Hi Phyllis - First, turn your caps lock off. Then, check that the AF-MF switch on the lens is on AF. Then, try cleaning the contacts, both on the body and the lens. If none of that works, call a Canon service center.
