Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Personally, brother - I am quite against using this section for SALE/TRADE of equipment as this is a forum, I do know your offer is a rare and pricey piece of super-telephoto (dying to have one for me..if I can afford it), leo has another section which is more specific and should consider the other section: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/ftz/index.php3. I have an old Nikon FG-20 SLR camera (from the '80s?) that came with a Nikkor f/1.8 50mm lens. I also just ordered a new Nikon D40 dSLR camera and, autofocusing incompatibility aside, I would like to know whether the old 50mm f/1.8 lens would fit and work with the D40.
Thanks in advance,

Hi Tony:
You have an "MX Automat", dating from 1951-1954. These came with either a Zeiss-Opton Tessar or a Schneider Xenar lens; both are of the same design and should perform comparably, but the Zeiss was priced about 10% higher and is a little bit more highly regarded. The same lenses were used from the X model of 1949 up until the 3.5E was introduced in 1957 with a Zeiss Planar or Schneider Xenotar lens. The Tessar is not quite up to the standard of the Planar, but it is an excellent lens, and there are probably no TLRs that can top it other than the later Rolleis.
You may find a case on eBay to fit your camera. I believe a case from any earlier Automat model will probably fit it; they changed slightly with the MX-EVS in 1954, which had a larger focus knob.
The Rolleis are very robust mechanically in addition to their excellent optics, and you can expect good service from your 50+ year old example - it probably has more life left in it than many newer examples of other brands. A CLA is, of course, probably a good idea.
I have a number of TLRs; my best one is an MX Automat, serial number 1247345.7. From : Tony MAson (tm174@aol.com)

I have just acquired a Rolleiflex 3.5. The serial number is 1242863 and the Zeiss Opton lens number is 751850. Can someone tell me a little about the equipment and where it fits in the scheme of things? I have pretty much been dedicated to 35mm photography and I am looking forward to trying out the larger format (in addition to working with a legendary piece of equipment!). I suspect a thorough CLA is in order and recommendations would be welcome. Any thoughts as to where I might obtain a Rollei case?8. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi Camilla:
1. Yes, the lenses from the X-370 and X-700 will fit the XG-M.
2. You are likely to encounter 2 series of manual focus Minolta lenses: one marked "MC", and the other marked "MD" on the front identification ring (if the lens is a different brand made to fit a Minolta camera, the MC or MD marking is usually on the back end). For manual and "aperture priority" automatic (you set the lens, the camera sets the shutter speed), both series are perfectly interchangeable. If you have a camera with "shutter priority" automatic (you set the shutter, the camera sets the lens opening) or "program" (the camera sets both the shutter and the lens opening automatically), you will need the MD lenses to use these settings. These cameras will still work with MC lenses in the manual and aperture priority modes.
If you have "MD" lenses, they can be used on all models without exception.9. From : Camilla (camillapenelope@hotmail.com)

Hi all,
I have been searching around for an answer to the following 'rookie' questions;
1) Are all the lenses on Minolta's manual cameras interchangable? Specifically: I have a Minolta XG-M and trying to buy compatible lenses, and looking at lenses formerly used on f.ex. X-370 and X-700. Will I have success?
2) I have read that all the Minolta lenses have the same mounting, and I have read that if you put an old lense on a new camera (or vice versa) some features might not be available. Is there any limitations to what lense fits what camera body without running into 'trouble'?
Thanks for reading through my queries. Do you have any suggestions? I have read so many postings and articles now, but still find myself lost in all the abbreviations and (for me) lack of basic information. This might of course be due to not being a native English speaker.....

Hi Jose:
There are adapters, but in order to focus to infinity with your MD lenses the adapter has to have a glass focus correcting element. This is not an ideal condition and I expect you will be disappointed in the results.
The only DSLRs that can accept Minolta MD lenses (via an adapter) without a glass correcting element are the Olympus models. The DSLR viewfinders are not designed for best manual focusing performance, and you will lose the automatic diaphragm operation in the lens as well. Look over your options; you may decide the Olympus is a good choice, or you may decide it's better to cash in your old lenses and commit to the new system you choose (which still might be the Olympus system, if you like it)
