Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. But if you want to leave a note on your experience visiting this site, you may use the MIR's MIR Guestbook | instead.

Hello, I am in a desperate search for parts for a Canon Lens. It's a 50 mm f 1.2 that somebody must have dropped as the 2 levers (Automatic/Manual Aperture Lever, Aperture Signal Lever) have been broken off and a ball bearing or two lost. Thanks to this wonderful WEB site, I now know the name of these parts. Any help in locating these would greatly be appreciated!

I have an F5 and am purchasing a 400mm 3.5 AIS lens. Is there any modification that can be done to the lens to allow it to communicate with the body. And why did Nikon not allow one to manually enter the information in the camera to allow for Matrix metering, as you can do on the FA.

Hello, I was hoping that someone would know where I could get a simple UV filter for a 50-300mm F/4.5 zoom Nikkor lens. I have been unable to find one, and with my increasing use of the lens I worry that if the glass isn't protected it may get *cringe* scratched *cringe* during use. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If possible e-mail me directly at: Code@projectperl.com. Thank you. -Code- Code@projectperl.com

How good is 105mm f1.8 AIS, a near mint one for RM 1700 is that reasonable?? A new 105mm f2.5 is that price too.

Apostolos - The big thing with front element defects/damage is the increased possibility of flare. A scratch adds surfaces and angles to catch and scatter light. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

To Ivan: Go for the Tokina if it's optics & mecanics works. It is a sharp (not super) and fast lens. And in your lucky case cheap. I think the ATX-series Tokina is pretty allright, I have the 35-200 (3,5-4,5), its a little bit heavy, but its sharp enough. Well, this question is not for T90 users only, but for Canon users in general (though I do have T90 :). What do you think about Tokina ATX 2.8/80-200 mm for Canon FD lensmouth ? There is this guy who is offering it for 250 US$. What do you think about this lens and the offer itself ? Should I go for it ?

I've been searching for a Noct Nikkor 58mm f1.2 lens to purchase and have not been able to find one. This particular lens has superb image quality and excellent low light level capabilities, but I can't find one. It is listed on Nikon USA website and still in their catalogs, but they don't seem to make these anymore or else they only make 1 every few years?!? Does anyone know where I could find this exact lens? If nobody has the lens, do you know how to get Nikon to make it for me? Any help is greatly appreciated.

###Scratches & lenses: a disastrous relationship or peaceful coexistence? I’ve discussed this topic with camera repair specialists, professional photographers and salesmen, and all of the opinions I’ve heard converge to this: the front lens element can take reasonable abuse with no impact to the picture. On the contrary, the slightest defect on the rear element has significant impact. Thus, as everyone I know suggests, stains, scratches etc. on the front element shouldn’t make someone worry about lens performance. However, no one made clear if there’s absolutely no impact or no noticeable impact. Anyway, it doesn’t make any difference. I have no personal experience of how a lens with an abused front element performs, but I would like to hear from people who have a different opinion. Also, I always wondered how much the dust on the internal elements affects lens performance. Others say there’s no impact caused by reasonable amount of dust. I have personal experience on this, and so far I agree that there’s nothing to worry about it. My 50mm lens is the oldest I have and the one I use most. Over time, its internal elements gathered dust and some tiny black spots. Despite all this, it delivers good results on slide and negative and I can’t tell if its performance has degraded. Of course, I’m talking about a reasonably dusty lens, not a filthy one. If someone of you people has anything to say about this, a different experience or a scientific explanation, I’d be glad to see your posts.
