Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Hi Hans: The 28/2.0 was made in Non-AI, AI and AIS versions. The AI and AIS will work on the FM-10, but the Non-AI will not. Click the URL line above for a guide to telling the different series apart.

As for value, my opinion on that would not get you any money. The best advice I can give is to check completed sales on eBay and see what they have been bringing in the past several days. Be aware that a lens like this is bought for its optics, and as such its resale value can be very much affected by scratches. Also, the Non-AI version will sell for less than the AI or AIS, since it must be modified to be usable on most post-1977 cameras.

Gary,

I do not know what your lens is worth on today's open market, and unless the lens is both optically, mechanically and cosmetically mint you will be very disappointed. As I always tell people - For a person with a use for a particular lens, its worth what he will pay for it. The 1200mm / f11 is a weighty piece of kit, but the problems of mounting FL/FD lenses on Canon Digital EF mount bodies (or other makes for that matter) tends to warn ornithologists etc, off this series of lenses. The real problem though in my opinion is the f11 max aperture - This lens will be a bloody sod to focus manually on most standard digital screens, even if the use of an adapter with an optical element produces acceptable images.

I will repeat previous advice to look up proper auction prices, as this may give you an indicator as to the value of this optic.

Thanks very much for all that, Glenn: obviously this lens is not something that I know very much about.

Sorry about the filters, I get caught up in them too. Unfortunately even with human monitoring of all of the postings, very strict filtering has been rendered necessary by some extremely unscrupulous individuals who go to great lengths to disable forums like this with massive floods of malicious posts. I'm glad you managed to get your point through, and thank you for your extra effort to do so.

You should also check proper auction lists.

The bloody spam filters will not accept any more details to expand the above comment!!!!

Perhaps this will get through!

Do not work out the anticipated value based on the ultra rare 6mm f2.8. You should look at the value of the 7.5mm f5.6 which is more akin to the stolen lens, then factor up a price for the 6mm. The 6mm f5.6 was in production for approximately 15 plus years, and as such is not exactly an uncommon beast.

I have a Canon FL 1200mm lens that belonged to my uncle who was a professional photographer. I know this lens was worth a good deal in its time mid 1970s. Is it worth anything today and to who?

My e-mail is gdavis2535@yahoo.com

Rick/Harvey,

I have some relevant information on your problem.
However the stupid 'spam filters' on this site will not let me post - even though I am supposed to help in the admin of this board! No matter how I word the post, it will not be accepted. About time the 'machine' recognised technical information!!

Hi Harvey: There is not a lot of traffic to judge by with such an uncommon item. I did find a few lenses on eBay that might help establish a general bracket: There is a 6mm f/2.8 listed for $35,000 (whew!); three 8mm f/2.8's, each for between $2,000 and $2,500; and an 8mm f/8 for $1400.

If you make the (perhaps reasonable) assumption that the relative values of slower and faster versions of each lens are in the same proportion, then your 6mm/5.6 would be worth about 2/3 as much as the 6/2.8 .... which would come to about $20,000 to $25,000.

That sounds like a heck of a lot of money. But then again, that's a pretty special lens. I don't know whether the market would ascribe that sort of value to the lens or not, I'm just guessing based on what I can find to compare.

I had a theft of a F5.6 6mm fisheye lens. I need help in establishing a replacement value . The lenses are vintage and to replace I need to know what it would cost if I could find one. They originally sold for $1295 in the early 60's. I can't find one anywhere but maybe some one could help me to establish value. Thanks for the message board where I hope to get help and a reply..
