Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Hello Greg: Your Tessar is a postwar product of the East German branch of the Carl Zeiss Company, which was split in two after the Second World War. I don't have my references handy, but the serial number is from the early 1950s somewhere; this lens would have probably come as standard equipment on a Praktica, as the other East German M42 product, the Contax SLR, generally came with a faster lens. The "T" was Zeiss'designation for a lens that was treated with antireflective coatings at the factory (for the most part, this just means it was made after the war; once coating ceased to be something to brag about, the special designations were dropped). I don't know of a handy clearing-house of data on lenses like this, but you may find some knowledgeable people here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ClubM42/ rick :)=2. Regarding the selection of a macro lens for salamanders. The 90 f2 is a great lens and would be a great selection for this use. One might also think of a very inexpensive lens, in particular the Vivitar 105mm f2.5 which can focus down to 1:1. The Vivitar scores a 4.0 on www.photodo.net.3. From : John (jhmacdonald@juno.com)

Hello all, I have an Olympus OM-2n. I am looking for the best all around macro lens, in terms of performance and cost. My intention is to take pictures of salamanders and other small wild critters. From the website I gleaned that the Zuiko 90mm F2.0 or 135mm F/4.5 are nice? Any thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Tonya5. From : GP13 (gp13_2000@yahoo.com)

Can someone please tell me the best place to find out about a particular lens, for example I have a Carl Zeiss Jena Nr. 3562651 Tessar 1:2.8 50mm T screw mount. Is there a reference book that is available, and what does the "T" stand for? Thank you, Greg6. From : John McDonald (johntmcdonald@yahoo.com)

I am looking for more information on the TV Nikkor ED Zoom 9 - 117mm lens. I have only been able to find it referenced in Peter Braczko's Complete Nikon System Handbook. Searching through the internet has not yielded many results as far as information on this lens is concerned. I hope somebody out there can help me out, Thanks.8. Re: the Canon 1.4x-A extender, my current understanding is this: the source of its limitation is the protruding element and the fact that most shorter-than-300mm lenses' rear element will collide with it. There are two exceptions - one on either sidfe of the published limit - that I'm aware of: one is the nFD 200mm f/2.8 IF, whose rear element is far enough from the mount to use it - I have both and have used the combo to great effect; and the other is the FD 400mm f/4.5 SSC, which has a square baffle on the mount end that will not pass the protruding element unless machined round. I'm told that later version of the 400/4.5 do not have this square baffle. I know of at least one person who has machined out that square baffle himself.

I am looking for a zoom lens (35-80?) for a Canon Elan II. I know of the Canon quality but the price for a used lens is beyond me at this time. I was looking at Sigma, Tokina, and Tamron. Does anyone have any suggestions which would work best and where I might find a good price? Thank you very much for you assistance.10. I have a Canon FD(new) 300mm f4 which does not focus to infinity (maximum 30 metres). I believe the adjustment is achieved by the screws under the rubber sleeve on the focusing ring. Anyone know how to do this?
ta very much
