Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. But if you want to leave a note on your experience visiting this site, you may use the MIR's MIR Guestbook | instead.

To -AD-: I agreed with earlier input of 'MCLau'. Since your longest reach focal length is only to 200mm, most likely you will try out lenses of longer than 300mm later. In this case, skip the 300mm and go to 400 or 600mm. Well, always buy a smaller aperture than the maximum for mobility. It can be a real pain to carry around and setting up. If price is a consideration, then, you can consider to buy a used 500 CAT lens and try it out - a poor man's ED glass and you can only use filters or film type to compensate for the fixed aperture. Generally, it is not that easy and enjoyable to handle lenses of long focal length. The newer AF-S Nikkor range of lenses is expected to expand (Currently, not too many choices and prices are real stiff); like what Leonard said, it is not a bad idea to wait a little while longer.

--- AD --- It is a difficult question, and I guess only you alone can give you the answer. I would rekon that your next purchase should be detrermined by the type of photography you are doing. If you are into architecture, consider a shift lens. If you are into macro, well a macro lens is most rational. And if you are into wild life, consider a 400mm lens, AI, Ais AFi or AFS, whatever :-))

You can only use stopped down AE mode with older Canon FL lenses on your AE-1. Canon FD (and FDn) lenses will provide full aperture metering and AE coupling. Canon FL lenses is only workable in stopped-down metering. I think it makes more sense to invest into a FD since you are using a automatic AE camera such as the AE-1. Other info that may be also useful to you can be found here:http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/SLRs/ae1/index1.htm

To whom it may concern: I would like to buy a lens for a friend and would like to know if the Canon AE-1 only takes the FD type lenses and not the FL? Thank you for your time and have a nice day.

I have a Nikon mount Sigma 18-35mm. When I bought it (second hand) more than three years ago, it gave me fantastic results. Unfortunately, the images started degrading after about a year. There were no fungus and I didn't suspect a thing until someone pointed out to me that I have what appears to be a thin coat of oil on the inside of my lense's elements. It is quite difficult to detect and unless you know what to look for, you will miss the film of oil and the lense will appear perfectly alright. The entire element has to be replaced. I was told this occurs quite frequently with Sigma lenses. Anyone else with similar experiences, especially with Sigma lenses?

Hi, has anyone had experience of using Tamron's famous FD28-200mm F/3.8-5.6 LD IF zoom? Is it good? I own a Canon A-1. I am considering to buy one. Need some opinion. Thank you.

To Steve: The Canon Macropoto Couplers FL are indeed reversing attachments for Canon FD lenses. They come in sizes 52,55, and 58mm ahd have a length of 20mm with an additional helical, focusing style, extension of 13mm which a fixed reversing tube would not. On one side is the lens filter thread, the other side has an FD style mount to attach to a camera or bellows, another tube, etc. The reversed lens then takes a macro hood on its pins side to unlock the diaphgram blades. Just one of many accessories Canon made for macrophotography.------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the best, easy to carry around, lens/camera combinations I've ever used was the Pentax 40mm 1:2.8 'pancake'lens and the Pentax MX. If only other camera companies had trod similar paths. Today I mainly carry a Canon F1N AE and 35mm 1:2.8, however, I still miss the 'pancake'. Finally, I've just bought a Canon 300mm 1:5.6 FD (new mount) and would appreciate any views or reviews from owners and former owners of the above lens. Best wishes Mike.
