Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Hi Rick,

I am using EOS bodies with reversing rings to mount the FD lens for my macro work. Thanks for the info.

I found on the Nikon site, a very handy chart, showing the Nikon part numbers for all the eyepiece correction lenses ("diopters") and which ones are compatible with which cameras.

Very helpful for an old guy like me who buys used cameras and wants to make sure he's ordering the right correction lenses.

Nick,

If you are reverse mounting the lens via the filter threads and suitable threaded adapter ring - you should be doing this when using standard lenses for macro - you need the FD macro rear lens hood. This useful device looks like a much more robust rear lens cap with the bottom missing - when attached to the lens mount it unlocks the aperture mechanism and allows the aperture ring to operate properly. These hoods do show up, but are worth their weight in gold to FD lens DIYers so tend to be somewhat like hens teeth. However all is not lost, the clue is in the statement 'bottom missing' and a simple bit of butchery will give you a workable equivalent. Take a genuine Canon nFD lens cap (the one with the serrations around the rear circumference) and carefully cut out the end. If you now mount the cap and fully rotate it, you will find that the cap will now rotate the inner part of the mount and unlock the mechanism. You can use the more flimsy breech mount cap, but you must also cut off the raised stops that are on each of the three lugs on the cap.

You could of course purchase the Canon FD dual cable release and remote aperture operating device. This bit of kit will allow you to operate the aperture mechanism when lens is mounted on extension rings and bellows, reversed mounted or not. The official Canon FD macro booklet is relatively easy to find via the internet, and should be a must have if you are going to do a lot of macro work.

Hi Nick:

Unlike all other mounts that I know of, in the Canon FD mount the aperture is mechanically locked when the lens is off the camera. It is possible to fiddle with it and make the lens think it's mounted so that the aperture functions; then you have to un-fiddle it again before you can mount the lens onto a body.

How, and on what kind of camera, are you using the lens?

rick

Hi Victor:

I don't have any information on GN lens production, but I do know that back in the early AI period, Nikon sold AI upgrade kits for many non-AI lenses... these kits included a new AI type aperture ring and the later style coupling fork with 'nostrils'. So it is possible to find a non-AI lens that looks like a factory AI job. I have a late non-AI 50/2.0 with this conversion. I'm not sure whether this factory AI conversion was available for the GN, but it seems likely that it would have been.

I have a NIKON NIKKOR-C 45mm f2.8 GN factory AI lens (SN760154). I assume this a very late production item. Many claim there were no AI versions ever produced! Does anyone have some background on later GN lenses and AI versions?
- regards Victor

Just recently I acquired a number of nikonos cameras and don't know anything about film cameras so I'm looking to sell them.
I have:
2- Nikonos III camera with 35mm lens (1:2.5)
1- Nikon UW-Nikkor 15mm lens (1:2.8)
1- Nikonos IV-A camera with 80mm lens (1:4)
1- Nikon UW-Nikkor 28mm lens (1:3.5)
I also have a strobe ( I do not know what model)
1- Minox 35mm camera with leather cover (was the worlds smallest automatic full frame 35mm camera)

I also have an assortment of accessories, o-rings (some have never been opened), a lot of various strobe arms.
I'm not sure if any of the cameras work so I have not been abel to test them.

My email address is mightymouse3882@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Hi Rick,

I bought a Canon FD 50mm f1.4 for macro photography. But I cant set the aperture. It is different from the Nikkor/Minolta lenses where their aperture close corresponding to the aperture ring. Can you please guide me how to go about it.

Grate site, I always enjoy finding new bis and pieces that I always love to use. I have now 2 version of 50mm F1.4, the original AF and latest AF-D. Comparing those, I found AF-D is bit lighter. The original AF version is 250g and AF-D is 230. Your site stated it as 210g and I think it is the very first version of F1.8.
Anyway, great work and I enjoy reading the site very much.

I have recently been given a Canon T90 with a number of lenses etc. Love the camera, works like a dream, but have a query re one of the lenses. It is a canonFD 55mm 1:1.2, has S.S.C engraved(?) in red. Seems that it works only as a manual, but I would love to know more about it. How best to use it. Can I rely on the meter readings that I get from the viewfinder? Anybody help, please. Bill
