Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. But if you want to leave a note on your experience visiting this site, you may use the MIR's MIR Guestbook | instead.

I would like to buy an AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8D IF-ED II and I have a Nikon D70 camera. I can't seem to find a straight answer about the compability of this lens. From what I can gather the autofocus won't work with this lens I would have to use manual focus. Please help. Thankyou

Hi Patricia: I don't have one of the digital SLRs, but I have a feeling that using those lenses on one would be kind of a hassle. Although the mounting flange is still the same, the system that communicates information between the camera and the lens has gone through a lot of changes over the years.

My father passed away over a year ago and we are still trying to sort through the basement and the many closets in the house. I have found the following Nikkor lenses:

Nikkor-Q Auto 1:3.5 f=135mm 927986
Nikkor-S Auto 1:2.8 f=35mm 320166
Nikkor-Q Auto 1:4 f=200mm 518605

Would any of these be useable on a low-end Nikon digital SLR (e.g., D50, D70)? I know that they are not AutoFocus lenses but I don't know how much a hassle it is to use manual lenses with one of Nikon's DSLRs.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Hi Kevin: This is just a subjective opinion, but if all you want is a lens in the ~150mm range I would go for the 135, either in the f/3.5 or the f/2.8 speed. The lens will be faster, smaller, lighter and probably have better sharpness, higher contrast and less distortion than the equivalent zoom, and it will probably cost less to buy it. Among zooms, the 100-200 is probably a good choice, and you can expect it to be at its best in the 150mm range.

Oh.. by the way, I do have a little problem here on my own as well - I am currently working on another new camera site (long-pending...). http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/eos/EOS-1n/index.htm for some of the EOS gurus out there, do help me to correct any areas that might be wrong. The basic framework for the site is more of less there, I will add whenever I think there are something new or should be included. The last phase will invite contributing artists to "donate" their pictures to neutralize the bore content of the site. Just see hwat level can you lend a hand in this. Thank You.
