Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. Thanks Rick, I'll look into the 'sticky' lens problem. I've had no success locating an EOS adaptor to fit the 600mm - I had thought about dismantling the EOS adaptor I purchased to remove the inner ring and insert that from the FD into it as it appears the os diameter of each insert is the same. A camera store employee stated the camera - lens combination would not function as there are 'no contacts' usually found on a EOS lens. Any comment. Thanks again.

Hi Trevor:
Is the lens stopping down (blades closing, screen darkening) as you turn the aperture ring while metering? The Pellix did not meter wide open, you had to actually stop the lens down to take the reading. From your description of both the metering behavior and the overexposed shots, it sounds like your diaphragm blades may be stuck open on the lens. This would not be uncommon in a lens of that age that had not been used for some time.
Does the 600mm have an interchangeable "T" mount? If so, I would get an EOS mount for it, then it will work on your new camera. If it doesn't, you would need an FD/EOS adapter, which will have a focus correcting element in it. This element does not do great things for image quality, but it might be okay - depends on your needs. Focal length will also increase somewhat beyond the lens' 600mm when you add the adapter.4. Current owner of Canon Elan II - used an AE-1 for 30 years prior. Have come into possession of a Canon PELLIX 1965 vintage with a Canon FL 58mm 1:1.2 lens and a Haminex 600m with adaptor. Installed new battery and tried one roll of 400 which I had on hand with the 1.2 prior to experimenting with to big guy. As per manual (which came with camera) I tried to set aperture and exposure with the meter operated by the CDS lever on the front of the camera. Outdoors, even with 1000 shutter speed, the meter needle would not drop into the mark and most of the trial photos are over exposed. The manual suggests to set desired speed first and then aperture until correct reading is achieved. Turning the aperture ring from 1.2 to 16 has no effect on the meter. I had a 1.4 on my AE1 and generally used 200asa but I don't recall having to use such fast shutter speeds for normal outdoor shots even with 400. Is it the combination of 400asa and this fast lenses or shall I assume the camera is in need of repair? Will the 600mm work on my EOS if I can find the correct adaptor? Thank you.5. Curious. What lenses are being made in China/Korean/Thailand Nikon plant ?8. From : Not clever either (no_contact@nospam.com)

It is not a stupid question, instad a very thoughful one for some. (Neither all of us are clever too). Yes, there are only minimal mechanical parts now with some IC circuitry in an AF lens and actually most of the parts are made of reinforced plastic inside. Frankly, my last time to send a lens of mechanical made for "lubrication" was probably 8 years ago. So, you need not have to worry too much with the lubrication matter.9. Stupid question: these auto-focusing lens obviously have moving parts, do they ever need to be lubricated?

I guess those you FL series you mentioned have the same configuration like a few of the oldeer Nikkor like 7.5mm f/5.6, 8mm f/8.0 and the OP-Nikkor 10mm which requires mirror lock up. All old Nikon F / Nikkormat and F2/F3/F4 which can takes these lenses have Mirror Lock up. One of the interesting optic with the protruding rear extension is http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/6070nikkor/fisheyes/10mmop.htm
