Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Question: I was trying to sell my Nikon 300mm 2.8 ED AIS manual focus lens on an auction site. Since my reserve wasn't met before the end of the auction, I emailed the closest bidder to see if he wanted to still buy it. (For basically the price he bid- which was very close to the reserve). He said yes, and then wanted me to "throw in" the RRS mount, which I said no to. After talking for 3 days back and forth, it seemed we had come to an agreement when he said this:
"I obtained additional information about this lens model. Specifically that there is a plastic part inside that is prone to break and that this part can only be obtained from another lens or from a repair facility that has a good stock of the part. Without it the diaphragm is stuck open. My source of information is a Nikon authorized service center." And then, after I asked him why he hadn't said anything earlier, and why he hadn't RESEARCHED before trying to buyb a 300mm, he said "Your price is just too close to what a used AF lens would cost. I've got to go with the newer equipment at such a small difference in price. Also, the MF lens has been replaced by two AF models now which means parts will become very hard to obtain." This guy claims he ONLY works in MF.

HUH! Has anyone heard of this so-called problem with this lens? It works perfectly and I've had it for over 2 years. It's been checked out by a reputable Nikon dealer and the glass is perfect- no dust, fungus. All the focus rings work perfectly, as well as the stops.

What do y'all think?

I would like some opinions and feedback about 2 lens. One is the later Vivitar Series I 75-210mm F2.8-F4.0 with macro. The other is a non-Series I vivitar of the same range but with F3.8 and macro. Will there be a noticable image quality difference in the 2 lens?? Thanks for your help.

Richard, I can comment on the 28-55mm f3.5-4.5 nFD Canon zoom. I got one and love it it has excellent color rendition and is out of my 23 Canon and Canon FD mount lenses one of my favorite. The super light weoght body is not thought of well by some owners but I have never had a ssingle problem with the three lenses I have had or do have with this type of construction. I can'r imagine someone having this lens and not being happy with the results. As to the 50mm unless you are a collector or do alot of your shots available light in the near dark I wouldn't spend the extra money for the 55mm f1.2 I have had a number of different 50mm f1.4 in fact all three version the chrome nose the S.S.C. marked version and the one I use now the nFD version with the smaller 52mm filter size all of them have been so sharp as to be painfull with great contrast and deep rich colors. The 50mm f.14 is refered to by many as a bench mark lenses it does it all very very well. Hope this helped, Mark W.

Hi all,
Just bought an A1 and am looking for lenses. Have read a lot about the 50 mm 1.4 SSC and also a lot about the 55mm 1.2. Seems that the former may be a slightly better lens overall, despite the fact that it's a ha;f stop slower. Any opinions? Secondly, the old 28-50 mm macro zoom seems to get a better write-up on these pages than the newer 28-55mm macro zoom. Again. any ideas or opinions.
Thanks Richard

Re/ my previous post:

The seller has offered a substantial rebate on the lens, now the problem is finding a thread ring to accomplish the repair. Anyone have a stash of Canon parts?

I have purchased a 70-210 Canon FD lens (Ebay) which has a chunk missing out of the filter thread ring. The description of the lens made me think it was a tiny chip when in reality it measures 3/8 of an inch and it appears that more may break off.

My Questions: Can this ring be replaced and is it inexpensive to do so? Would the impact that originally damaged the ring (it is rather flimsy) be great enough to misalign or otherwise damage the lens in some other way?

THANK YOU!

I have an original Canon F1 s/n227057 with a 50mm 1:1.4 lens. I am interested in obtaining a good quality telephoto lens for this camera. Can you recommend a source for these FD lenses? Thank you.
