Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. I came across a Canon FD 100mm 2.8 lens with no focusing or aperture ring. The only other markings are U. S. Navy.2. From : Tim C (Timcannady@hotmail.com)

Hey guys, a quick question! I just got my 100mm macro lens in the mail that I won via an ebay auction. So far, I love what it can do! I'm new to macro lenses though and had a few questions about correcting the aperture. Refer to this link to see a picture of the actual lens that I just got.... http://www.tfb.com/oce/auction/031603/canonmacro-1.jpg
There is a chart that lists the correction to use at different ratio magnifications. Is this a plus or a minus to the usual aperature that I would use? For example, the chart says at 1:1, correct 2 F-stops; (+) or (-) 2 F-stops? Also, I what magnification ratio is this lens capable of without any extra extensions? It says 1:4 on the lens near the specs, but there are two other places on the camera that list ratios: one going horizontal above the green and white feet and meter numbers (refer to the link...). See the "3" above the green 1.75 feet number? Well, farther right, it goes up to 8 and ends with "1:10" so I figure this is the macro magnification ratio. However, to the left, it stops at two, making me think that the most it could magnify would be 1:2, but there there is a vertical listing showing ratio numbers that appear as I zoom the lens and they go all the way down to "1:1". If I set the zoom all the way out, it will read 1:1 here, but "2" on the horizontal chart. I'm sure theres an explanation to this, but again, I'm new to macro lenses! Thanks guys if you've made it this far! :) -Tim3. From : Mac (nmcfarland@comcast.net)

I have a Canon 75-200mm FD with macro, the problem is the button that is depressed to use the macro feature has somehow disappeared. Can this be fixed? Thanks4. From : Greg Chappell (gregmchappell@nww.net)

David, AI and AIS mounts are almost identical. The only difference is a small "scoop" in the mount of AIS lenses that mechanically communicate with cameras designed to use that technology. The main cameras of that type are the FA and FG- manual focus Nikon cameras that offer shutter priority as well as aperture priority automation prior to the advent of auto focus.
AF cameras offer shutter and aperture priority programs as well, but do not do so via the mechanical type of communication- they use the CPU's located in the lens mounts. That is why no manual focus Nikkor, either AI or AIS, can be used in shutter priority modes of AF cameras unless a CPU is installed, and only a few AF cameras (mainly the F4) even offer any sort of campatibility with manual Nikkors without a CPU.
AF Nikkors up to now have included the scoop to keep some sort of backward compatibility with the older Nikon cameras, but that is starting to give way with lenses now being introduced with less compatibility, such as "G" series lenses. At any time Nikon could discontinue the "scoop" that makes a lens AIS- they haven't made a camera that's needed it for almost 15 years. I am NOT saying they would ever discontinue the F mount itself, just the mechanical coupling that allow the new lenses to work with the older cameras.5. From : David Heath (adultart@hotmail.com)

Rick, well it has been tested at two different shops and they say its fine. Some have suggested its vignetting due to wide open aperatures.
Email at my addy Rick and I will send you a series of 3 exposures made at 250 500 and 1000 and you can see what is happening. HELP! Im pulling my hair out over this one!7. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi Scott: are you sure (i guess you are) that it's underexposing at BOTH ends of the same frame? it's not too uncommon for a cloth shutter to expose unevenly from one end to the other at high speeds if it's out of adjustment, but i can't envision right now how it can underexpose both ends relative to the center. this would involve at least one curtain slowing down, speeding up and slowing down again during its travel. a very strategic placement of dirt in the gears might be able to have an effect like this, but i've never seen anything quite like it. rick :)=8. Hi, My T70 is missing the cap that screws into the remote terminal when not in use. Just a trivial thing but the camera is in mint condition otherwise. Anyone have or know where I might get this part? Cheers, Paul.9. From : Scott Evans (mbsevans@rogers.com)

I have a MINT A1 that recently had a CLA performed on it. My first roll through the camera has caused me some concern. If you divide the image up into 3rds...the outside 3rds are under exposed compared to the centre 3rd of the the image! Now after running several more test rolls through the camera I have concluded that it ONLY happens or is ONLY noticable at higher shutter speeds from about 250 to 1000. It is MOST noticeable at 1000. I have tried different lenses and various other settings like Program and Aperature priority. I dont seem to remember noticing this problem BEFORE the CLA...I have taken it back to shop and they say its fine but shop manager also adds...stay away from 1000 speeds! Well that is BS for a unit in this great a shape! I have taken it to another shop for checking and they say its fine too. But I am getting a third opinion also. Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this? I am thinking that even thought the shutter speeds are fine...the curtains may not be setup properly??? This is driving me nuts...but if I must...I guess I will move on and get something newer anyway. Still if I can avoid this I would like to for now anyway.

Hi, Job,
You might also check with Pacific Rim Camera. They have MANY original Nikon AI kits. I do not know if they have the one for your specific 50/1.4 Nikkor, but it wouldn't hurt to ask. They sell some of those kits from time to time on eBay, but they are all listed on their website and most are on sale for $25. I just bought an original Nikon aperture ring (repair part) from them to convert my non-AI 180/2.8 Nikkor. The ring wasn't part of an AI kit- just a repair part, but the only other thing that makes up an AI kit is the two-holed rabbit ears (upposed to the solid rabbit ears) and I have one of those, so mine will look like an original Nikon AI'd lens when I'm finished with it.
