Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. Thanks Rick. I found where I can have the lens cleaned. I was told the 55 macro was designed in a way that allowed oil to leak worse then most lens. I'm also having the FA cleaned and new light seals installed.
Now I have some SB-16 flashes that don't work. Do you think they would be worth the expense to have them fixed? I'm not positive what is wrong with them but believe only lose connections.

Glenn , thanks for your input, you are probably quite right, after I posted the question I spoke to my eldest son who has a physics degree, and has studied nuclear physics when he was at university, he researched it for me on the internet for me because I don't understand much of the information about radiation, he told me that in fact you got much more dosage of radiation watching TV, and anyway at my age drinking too much coffee( as I do) was a much bigger risk.5. Mugshot,
You should disregard much of what has been written on the web, about the health hazards of Thorium based optical glasses. A large percentage of sites seem to repeat verbatim, the information from a couple of rather dubious sources. ( A major fault of the internet - people rarely if ever quote their source, thus a great deal of misinformation is passed off as true fact.)
Depending on the geology of the area you live in; you could be at greater risk from Radon Gas in your house foundations, than from carrying your lens about on a daily basis.7. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

The EF is an excellent camera, I think it's the best of the classic Canons this side of the F1. As for health hazards, the exposure of being in a factory making them 40 hours a week is very different from that of having one in your camera bag on occasion. It's a bit like pharmaceuticals: you want to be careful about the dosage you take, but imagine the care that the production line workers have to take making the stuff.8. Thanks for replying Rick, I doubt if I will be carrying anything for the next forty years at my age. I recently bought A near mint Canon EF with fitted with the lens to add to my Canon FD system, and subsequently read that the Japanese Government stopped Canon from manufacturing them because of the health hazard to their staff, but what I don't know is was it because of the danger of ingesting the glass dust during the grinding process, or because the completed lenses emitted dangerous levels of radiation,(although I would have thought if so it would fog the film ) or a mixture of both, it looks like I didn't just buy a camera but a research project, in the meantime I'll just have to live dangerously.

Hi Mug:
I'm going to stick my neck out and tell you that the lens is safe to use... just don't spend the next 40 years walking around with it in your pocket. The brief amount of time that you spend with your eye close to the lens in normal use should not pose much of a risk.
If the yellow cast is pronounced enough to be a problem, people have reported success in clearing yellowed lenses by placing them on the windowsill in the sun for a week or so. Wrap the barrel in aluminum foil to reduce the heating effect of the sun, and orient it so that the sun shines as directly as possible into the lens. Being a Canon lens, I guess it will have the diaphragm nearly closed when it's off the camera, so make sure the yellowed element is facing the light.10. I recently bought a canon FD 35mm f2 B/L chrome nose lens, the one with radioactive Thorium glass, and the yellow cast, do you think they are actually safe to use, or should I be wearing lead lined boxer shorts.
