Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. But if you want to leave a note on your experience visiting this site, you may use the MIR's MIR Guestbook | instead.

The Nikon F has a forum at http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/messageboard/nikonfmsg/index.php
the best person to ask for the F is Rick Oleson. Email:- rick_oleson@yahoo.com
Url : http://rick_oleson.tripod.com I am not so good with the F. So, it is better that Rick can answer this.

I have a AE-1 with a 50mm 1.4 fd and a 28mm 2.8 fd.
My problem is that the apperature doesn't seem to be working past 5.6 and a half. In other words, it won't close down manually to 22. What can i do to trouble shoot this.
Thank you.

Anson: before WW2, Carl Zeiss was based in Jena. At the end of it, before Jena got under USSR control, the allies moved most of the Zeiss main staff to the western control zone, where later production started under the Zeiss brand. Even if machinery and some of the staff were moved to USSR (i.e. Kiev), in the late forties production began again in Jena using the Zeiss brand too. After the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the "western" Zeiss acquired some of the "eastern" Zeiss assets, like the original plants in Jena. You can easily find more detailed informations just searching for "Zeiss history".

IF you want to read numbers between the two, try here:
http://www.pauck.de/marco/photo/stuff/zeiss_west_east/zeiss_west_east.html

Zeiss Germany has this site: http://www.zeiss.com/photo
A good intro on the Jena Zeiss: http://captjack.exaktaphile.com/Zeiss%20page.htm

In fact, Rick has a page on the Jena at http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-81.html

Just a quick question: Difference between Zeiss and Zeiss Jena. I was told the Zeiss is west German and Zeiss Jena is East German, Are both companies related ? The Zeiss Jena lenses are cheaper - are they measure up to the West German counterpart ??

Hi Omers:

I guess this is the 180/2.8 Zuiko? I'd sure jump at a chance to get one, whether or not I had the 200/4. The f/2.8 is, of course, a much bulkier and heavier lens, but it would be worth having for the faster shutter speeds it permits (and, what the heck, just because it looks so cool on the camera!) Plus, you can use the 1.4x with it.

130 what? If it's dollars, it's certainly a bargain, if pounds sterling less so.

Dear Rick, that was too bad. 1.4X Tele-extender is more expensive. I got this one from a pawn shop. Since I am here, may I ask is it justify to upgrade (or get another 180mm since I have the 200). I like the blur of the 180, it is also with the shop. Hesitates (offered at 130-00). very tempting...

Hi Patrick:

I have never disassembled that lens, and I wouldn't want to take a blind guess at it. The way to remove the aperture control ring will be by removing the bayonet flange, and the screws ARE very tight: Nikon used a thread locking compound on their mount screws, and they can be extremely difficult to remove sometimes. Beyond that, you'll just have to see what you find to explain the problem.

Hi Omers:

No, according to the OM System Lens Handbook, the 1.4x-A teleconverter is NOT compatible with the 200/4.0 lens. Compatible lenses listed are: 180/2.8, 250/2.0, 300/4.5, 350/2.8 and 400/6.3.
