Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Hi, i inherited a nikon camera (the guy at the camera store said it was from 1972) There are the numbers F2 7320662 on the top left side and the entire body is black with no silver on it at all. It is also quite heavy, can anyone venture a guess as to what model this is and also give me a critique of the camera. The camera store guy said it was one of the best cameras ever made, a professional camera. Any help would be appreciated as I don't have a users manual and need to know what model this is in order to get one.

I recently aquired a 35mm f3.5 SC lens, on using it for the first time it is evident that it has a distinctly yellow/sepia colour cast, thought for a bit it might be fungus but close examination of the optics shows no sign, all seems clean but the coating is definitely coloured. Has anyone any experience of this sort of thing? Tony Ireland

I recently purchased a Canon FD4,0/17mm wideangle lense with old chrome mount. Unlike all other FD lenses with chrome mount I own, this lens does not have a bayonet ring to mount a sunshade (is this the right word ?). The lens has a 72mm filter thread; the outer diameter of the lens a the front end is 75mm. Does anyone know what kind of sunshade was originally recommended by Canon for this lens?

Norbert, I have the canon 400 4.5 ssc lens and a 1.4x extender. When I got the lens, the extender would not mount due to that square hole you speak of. I took a file and rounded the hole til the extender would fit, now it works fine.

Off course I am talking about the extender 1.4X-A, not convertor. Als made a typo in my email adress. Correct one with this posting. Sorry about this. Norbert

Hi, I am interested in buying a 400 f4.5 canon fd lens. However I noticed it has a square plate at the mount (it's a newFD mount). I red on these pages that some older (SSC) lenses have this and that this will prevent using the 1.4X convertor. Is this square plate common on this lens in newFD? Or are there more versions? I do not have a 1.4X convertor nor has the shop I want to buy from so I can not try this combo. Since I am also interested in buying the 1.4X convertor some time I'd like to know if this combo (as described) will work? Thanks and happy holidays! Norbert Meijering

Clive, there's a manual for the FTb here - it's not quite identical to the FT-QL, but it's pretty close. Main differences, I think, are the Quick-Loading system and stop-down vs full-aperture metering (I believe the FT-QL uses stop-down metering only). http://www.canonfd.com/acroman.htm
