Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. But if you want to leave a note on your experience visiting this site, you may use the MIR's MIR Guestbook | instead.

Frans: The PN numbers printed on your micro nikkor lens are scales (reproduction ratio) indicating the respective ratios when you mount a dedicated PN-11 extension tube between the camera and the lens. When you use the 105mm alone, the lens can reach 1/2 life size magnification, when you use the PN-11 in combination with the micro-105mm lens, it enables the lens to reach 1:1 life size reproduction on film. There is a section featured on various combinations of extension tubes/rings here: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf3ver2/macro/macro1.htm and a better description in relation to their respective functions at: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf2/macro/index1.htm enjoy ! Don't thank me, I didn't create these websites (the name of the creator/host is Leonard) but I do roughly know the whereabout of the various articles located. The trick is to READ and see the various links it provides.

Hi Cameron: The 17mm FD lens will not mount on an EOS camera. As far as I know, any adapter that might make it mount would result in it no longer being a 17mm wide angle lens, which, in addition to the effect on image quality, would kind of ruin the whole point of the lens. If an EOS mount lens is too costly a proposition, you might consider picking up a used manual focus Canon body to go with the lens. rick :)=

Just a question and a remark, First thanks for your excellent website ! Great. I bought a second hand manual focus Nikkor 105mm f2.8 micro. Unlikely without user manual. Please can you what does the PN numbers mean? Kind regards

I'm new to Canon equipment and recently purchased a Canon EOS D30. I understand the EOS / AF mount but can I use the older FD mount lenses on the D30? I would like to purchase a Canon 17mm FD WA lense but need to know if it will mount to an EOS camera. I don't need auto focus with a wide angle lense. Picture quality and cost are the import needs right now. Thanks

Fred, Jim: I believe FD stands for full diaphragm, referring to the fact that the FD lens can meter wide open, vs the older FL lenses, which required stopping down to meter. Here is an excellent discussion of breechlock vs new FD: http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=002JL9 3rd party lens makers made lenses in FD mount, but the Canon FD lenses are so cheap (relative to EOS lenses), why bother when you can get Canon quality at such a low price?

Fred: FD doesn't really mean anything, it was the last manual-focus canon mount and is the correct mount for everything from the FTb through the T series. There are third party lenses still around, and you can find a lot of good stuff used.

Jim: The newer bayonet mount is more convenient, I think the construction of the breech lock lenses may have been more robust, especially the earlier (pre-AE1) examples. Optics may be a bit more advanced in the later lenses though, to offset the ruggedness question.:)=
