Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. Hi,
I've a Canon manual reflex camera, with 5 differest lenses, starting from 19mm to 300mm.
Recently I've gained (by marriage) a Nikon F3 camera, with one Nikkor lens (35-1xxmm zoom).
Does someone know if I can use , with an adapter, my Canon lenses on the Nikon F3?
Is it a good thing to do, or can I incurr in mess?
Is AE photography still possible?
Thanks
Mazzini Alessandro

Hi, I have just bought a second hand Nikon EM camera. It came with a 50mm F2 AI Manual Nikkor Lens. Now my problem is I dont know how to use the lens. It has some many numbers and slidy things on it. Can any one offer some advice as this is my FIRST SLR camera. All so what other lens would fit the camera. And is the lens I just mentioned for basic shots or close ups etc???? Thanks Evelyn3. I'm looking for a good, lightweight zoom lens for my minolta xg-m. Price is one of my bigger concerns. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks5. From : mark wahlster (awahlster@aol.com)

There are a number of 35-200mm lenses made by Tokina Kiron and Vivitar. The Tokina I know to be a little on the soft side. While I have not any direct info on the Kiron I would suspect the same as the range does not lend itself to a real sharp lens but the Tokina has been said to be a good travel lens as most travel shots are not to critical. Canon made a very hard to find 50-135 f3.5 that is very sharp and expensive when you can find it. Tokina in their RMS line makes a pretty good 35-135 not real fast f4.5 I think but I have heard from users that it produces nice resolution.

Art, Check out Vivitar Series I lenses. They make a 70-210mm f/2.8-4.0 which is a little bit long for your wide angle preference, but I don't know of any manual focus lenses that cover the range you're seeking. The new models are a bit lightweight on construction quality, but unless you're going to be banging it around, they should be OK. If you trust used equipment, the older Vivitar S1 lenses are of higher construction quality, although I think the optics are equally good.
OK on the Promaster. Canon zooms are good quality (construction & optics) but IMHO not worth the price premium over the Vivitar S-1's. Good luck, TomR.7. From : Art (ptak-1@worldnet.att.net)

Hello, I own a AE-1Program and I am interested in a zoom lens for the camera. The desired zoom range would be from about 40-200mm, but willing to settle for less. I have seen a Promaster 28-210mm f3.5 for the camera and I was wondering if anyone might have any comments on this particular lens. Are there any better choices in both new and used equipment for a zoom lens like this (please give specifics)? How does the Canon 35-105mm lens compare to the Promaster? I would like to retain the cameras ability to set the aperture automatically. Your comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.8. From : Brian (bharen@bellsouth.net)

Question on a Tokina 28-70mm Looking to buy a used Tokina MF 28-70mm f2.8-4.3 macro in an OM mount. Can't find ANY info on this lens on the web. Anyone have any personal experience with this lens? Good? Bad? Thanks in advance! Brian9. From : Mark W. (awahlster@aol.com)

Emma, I understand your problem I spent 14 years as a cutom Knifemaker and product photography just very very important since i never had anything to show customers unless it was right before a show. My suggestions are easy get a set of Canon FD extension tubes they fit behind your lens and will allow up 1-1 closeup with effecting your metering and are very very easy to use. A nice ring light flash would be my next step a little hard to find but I think Freestyle and B&H photo both have new ones available this type of flash that is a ring around the end of your lens will work real nice with jewlery. A good book on close photography might help but most of these are a bit past what you need. By the way NO camera body is going to be any better at closup stuff then another it's all the lens the light and the support when it comes to macro work.
just my 2 cents US

I recently obtained a FD 35-105 Zoom lens for Canon mount made in Japan.
It is called model 5 but has no manufacturer name. Does anybody know what 3rd party company made it? I was told it takes excellent pictures.
