Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Good Morning, I've been a Nikon user since the 50's and am seeking some information regarding a tripod collar for my older AF 80-200mm f2.8 lens. I noticed a removeable tripod collar on this great Nikon site and was wondering if anyone knows is it available at the present time. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I'm hoping maybe someone has helpful information.

Hi Deb:

I can't tell the exact model from your description, but you have a Leica, one of the greatest names in classic cameras. It most likely dates from between 1935 and 1955. If you can send me the serial number I can pin it down better.

If you show this camera to a collector or dealer and sound like you don't know what it is, you will probably get an offer for it, and it will probably be too low. Not many of us are lucky enough for our family-heirloom cameras to also turn out to be true collector's items, but this is one of those.

I found an old camera of my grandfathers. It is a E. Leitz Wetzlar. The only marking I see is on the lens, Leitz-Hektor f-10cm 1:2,5. I was wondering if anyone could give me any information about this camera. It is in excellent condiditon and in its original brown case. ANY info would be appreciated.

Okay.. I remember leo has an article on why the AF-S doesn't works on older AF Nikon: ".. ne may know most of modern Nikkor lenses comes with quite a looong name in their description. For those who may be new to all these terms; probably here I think we should decode some of the lens designations used in this AF-S 80/200D ED-IF. Firstly, "AF" simply refers to autofocus lens type, usually it comes with a provision for manual focusing; the "S" after the AF is referred to a new breed of autofocus Nikkor lenses which have embedded a Silent Wave Motor ("SWM") built into lens (which previously Nikon termed predecessor class for this lens type as AF-I). Anyway, both genetically offer the same functionality as an AF-D or AF-G lenses. The "D" here is referred as autofocus lenses that enables Distance Information during focusing. The D-type and G-type Nikkor relay subject to camera distance information to a compatible AF Nikon cameras bodies via an encoder in the lens. This enables certain Nikon camera's 3D matrix metering and 3D Multi-Sensor balanced fill flash to be fully utilized. Note: The "G" type lenses is typically without traditional aperture ring and the interface between camera/lens is entirely electronic.

The difference between these lenses is that AF-S / AF-I lenses contain a focusing motor built in to the lens (rather than using the auto focus motor built in to the camera body to drive for focusing). This enables faster autofocusing. In the case of the AF-S lenses, it operates in a more silent auto focusing than any of the previous Nikkor lenses conventional camera driven AF system. Originally, AF-S Nikkor lenses usually are deployed into super telephoto lenses such as the 300mm, 400mm, 500mm and 600mm, or zoom lenses with a fast maximum aperture such as the AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8. The early batch of AF-S Nikkor were found on 17-35mm and 28-70mm but it is extending its usage on many other new series of AF Nikkor lenses today after these early successful attempts. ..."

"... The SWM technology used in Nikons AF-S lenses, work by convert traveling waves into rotational energy to focus the optics. The ultrasonic traveling waves move in a spiral pattern inside the lens barrel. The motor is positioned on top of the waves, and they drive it from below. In principle it is similar to surfing, the waves drive or push the surfer provided he's balanced atop them. This enables high speed auto focusing that's extremely accurate and super quiet. Each AF-S Nikkor lens' Silent Wave Motor interfaces directly with the lenses' focusing elements. Because there is no gear-train, there is none of the power loss or noise associated with conventional gear-type lens driving systems. The lens receives the power for it's internal focusing motor and the focusing instructions from the camera body and therefore can only be used with suitable cameras. This partly explained why the AF-S series is only being recommended to be used with a selective of older Nikon SLR camera models....".

the extract of these are from original article (AF-S 80/200 f/2.8): http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/AFNikkor/AF-Nikkor80200mm/index4.htm

Leo has an article that relates to AF-G where I got it from Google search: http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/NikonF5/compatibility/index.htm
F5 was the first Nikon that had introduced the Canon way of command dials control system. The first AF-G was the 70-300mm f4~5.6G (if i am right). You can find a related page at http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/AFNikkor/AF70300mmf4556ED/index.htm#G
IF I am not wrong here: AF-G Nikkor will only provide Shutter & Programmed AE in your F401(x). Manual is OUT, So, does Aperture priority AE because as the lens doesn't has an aperture ring, there is NO WAY for your camera to control or adjust apertures. Next (IMPORTANT), even then, the newer AF-S is totally out, even if it uses on many of those of the Nikon AUTOFOCUS bodies, it will revert back to MANUAL focus lens. There are too many restrictions on backward compatibilities. These (AF-G+S) are only designed for newer series of Nikon AF bodies which have body dials esp the thumb dials for adjusting the aperture on these aperture ring-less lenses. I don't have a F401x series but from the pictures shown at http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/htmls/models/htmls/slr8991.htm, it lacks the necessary features of dials control. So, in short, your combination only restricts within two shooting modes, i.e. P & S only. Sucks?... I know.

Hello to everyone...

I am looking for some information concerning the Nikon 401s(n4004) and what lenses i can use on it...

I have already a Nikkor 28mm f:3.5 lens which seems to work well, but i have the chance of getting a couple of AF G lenses, will they work with my camera and if not then which series do work??

I have looked at everything i can lay my hands on to tell me about the camera, even downloading a manual, but as for the lenses this is baffling me..

I look forward to your responses..

regards

Peter

Hello Roman:

If that strip is in bad shape, the foam light seals around the back door probably need attention too.

There is a fellow who makes up very good foam replacement kits, with very good instructions, and sells them for about $10. He sells these on eBay under the name "interslice", and he ships worldwide. If you can't find him there, email me and I'll send you his email address.

Hi all Nikonians, can anyone help me how to repair or replace the plastic foam strip above the mirror hole? I have just bought one FE2 in mint conditions apart from the foam strip, that is a bit sqeezed flat. Thank you all very much for any comments.
