Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. Hi there, I have a Nikon lens case with CL-3 stamped on the top. Would anyone know which type of lens this was made for?

Many thanks.

Billy,

As always with optical equipment, you get what you pay for. A while ago I needed to make a couple of macro adapters, the purchase of two of these items was the quickest/cheapest route. Before submitting them to the lathe, I decided to see how they performed. Compared to my genuine Canon adapter, the result from one was rubbish. The second gave passable results, when the lenses were used in mid aperture range. On subsequent examination of the first adapter, the optics were found to be mounted at an angle, to the actual optical axis of the adapter - poor machining had left a burr in the lens recess.

The comparison was carried out on my 1Ds Mk11, using the FD macro lenses and the 300mm/400mm f2.8 L telephotos.

If you approach the matter from the 'something is better than nothing' point of view, you may be pleasantly surprised with the results - especially if the FD optic is a good one and you restrict print size. If on the other hand, A3+ prints and optical performance akin to the original FD lens is wanted or expected - you will be very disappointed.

How many people have used the cheap fd to eos adapters found on Ebay etc? There are so many great old lenses out there for sale. I was just wondering what type of results people get?

I am seeking to buy a couple of OM2n and Om1n cameras along with Zuiko lenses 21f2, 24f2, 35f2, 40f2, 90f2 and any other lenses anyone could recommend as excellent. I am new to Olympus,
(need light weight due to injuries) and would appreciate any suggestions. If anyone would like to sell any of these or could recommend where I could buy them I would also appreciate. Please include telephone and best time to contact in response if possible.
Thank you. Steve

Deryck: both "FD" (ring) and "New FD" (button) have a metal mount - no plastic. A rule of thumb is "more expensive lenses give best results" - but like all ROT is not always true, there are some exceptions.
The so called "New FD" or FDn lenses are usually a bit smaller and lighter than their previous counterparts, sometimes they have an improved design and sometimes not.
Overall, there are usually two lens lines: a "mainstream" one for amateurs and a "professional" one aimed at pros. The latter are usually faster and sharper, but larger and heavier. The lens to buy strictly depends on your needs. For example, when I travel I prefer lighter and smaller lenses. Read each lens description carefully, and choose the lens that is best for you.

Hi,
I have a very basic question for you. I am hoping to buy a T-90 and some FD lenses, but I am looking for guidance on which variety of FD lenses(ie those with a metal breech-lock ring, or those with a plastic mounting ring) gives the best photographic results. I really appreciate any help.

Deryck Harnett
