Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. But if you want to leave a note on your experience visiting this site, you may use the MIR's MIR Guestbook | instead.

Paul Keyser: The G-series simply has NO aperture ring except it has a common electronic coupled F-mount which can be "inserted" into any Nikon SLR body. Well, it was designed primarily as an entry level cheapie zoom for budget conscious consumers who just wants a companion xzoom lens to go along with one of those entry level AF SLRs they have bought. Since it has no aperture ring, don't even think of using it with your manual focus SLRs, in particular with popular camera models such as Nikon FM2n etc. Well, I thought the E-series has better value in terms of compatibility and used value.

TOPIC: REPAIR OF VIVITAR SERIES 1 ZOOM -- WORTH IT?

I have a Vivitar Series 1 70-210 f3.5 zoom (original
owner of it and an AE-1 program -- 2001 marks 20 years
together!) which has developed some problems, and I'm
curious to get a sense of whether it's worth repairing.

The main issue is that infinity focus point seems to
slip. Sometimes inifinity is right at the stop, as usual,
at other times, infinity is nearly over by the 30m mark,
and one can keep twisting *past* infinity.

This makes it hard to focus -- when shooting distant
subjects it's nice to just crank it over and know
you've got it right. And the lack of consistency really
make it tough -- scale is useless.

Anyone had problems like this with the Vivitar or
other lenses? Expensive to fix? The local camera shop
I called doubted that it would be worth fixing.

It looks like I can get a Canon 70-210 f4 for ~$200. Would
that be a better bet than fixing this zoom?

Thanks,
Dave Burbach

Hello, I posted this question on another board. I hope some one knows the answer. How does the D series of Nikon Nikkor lenses differ from the non-D series of lenses. I realize that the E series lenses are considerably less expensive than the non-E series. Thank you for your answer. Paul Keyser

Victor: That sounds like the focusing on your lens need to be re-calibrated. When the focusing is set up on a lens it is done at infinity and all distance will be correct. Good luck

I recently purchased a Canon FD 35-105mm f/3.5 lens. While trying to focus on the vertical edge of a house in the distance at 105, the split screen on my F1, A1 and T70, don't quite align. This seems to get worse when zooming back down to 35. It seems to be fine at closer distances, just not at infinty. My 75 to 200 and 100 to 300 don't seem to have this effect.

Does anybody out there in the world know what might be causing this? Is it serious or just annoying idiosyncrasy of this individule lens. Thanks, Victor

Donnie: It should tell you on the lens which camera it’s for. Look on the part that mounts on the camera if it’s for a Canon it will say C. FD. Or FD. Nikon = NK. I think

Someone has advertised a fast speed Minolta MD-X zoom 40-80/2.8 lens at: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/ftz/index.php3 what is the "X" stands for ? I wen to check the lens, it has a attachment which seems like a motorised device attach to the zoom. Is it a motorized AF lens for the manual focus Minolta ??
