Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. Hi Lance:
You're sort of right: The 1.6x "crop factor" means that a 17mm lens on a 30D will give about the same coverage as a 28mm lens on a 35mm film camera. But since the 30D is what you have, if you want that kind of wide angle coverage then you need the 17-85. If you put the 28-135 on the 30D, you'll only have about a normal lens at the wide end, no wide angle.
If you put the 28-135 onto a film camera or a full-frame 5D, it will give results very similar to what you'll get on the 30D with the 17-85.2. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi Douglas:
As far as I know, the only DSLRs that will accept your Maxxum lenses are the Sonys. Many different lenses can be used on Canons (and Olympus E-Volts) with adapters, but I don't believe the Maxxums are among them.3. From : douglas leker (douglas.leiker@warmearthcosmetics.com)

I have a Minolta Maxxum 7000 AF 28-85 w/macro lens, plus Minolta Maxxum 2800 AF flash (and a bunch of filters)from the 1980's with my old film camera gear.
My question: will this lens (and flash) work on any other digital SLR's besides the Sony Alpha DSLR camera? I have read postings of it being used on some of Canon's digital SLR's and am finally ready to move up to a higher quality digital SLR.
Thanks,

Thanks. I thought I understood that with the 1.6x multiplier applied to the 17x85 it effectively made it at 27.2x136, so effectively the same coverage as the 28x135. That was the basis of my confusion as to which one to buy.5. From : Luigi D. Sandon (cp@sandon.it)

Lance: well, they are not very similar at all, different focal lengths - with the 17-85 you get - IIRC the D30 multiplier - a lens from a moderate wide-angle to a moderate telephoto, with the 28-135 you get a lens from a "standard" focal to a slightly longer telephoto.
Most specs could be the same, but they cover different focal lenghts and thereby what kind of images you can capture.6. From : Lance Bocarsly (lbocarsly@socal.rr.com)

For my Canon 30D, I am considering either the 17-85 IS USM lens or the 28-135 IS USM. They seem to be very similar. Any suggestions?7. From : Jeff Green (cdtech@vermontel.net)

I just purchased a used Canon EF 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 MACRO LENS at what I hope was a good price. I bought it on Ebay and have not received as of today. Has anyone own or have used this particular lens in the past and do they have any knowledge of it's capabilities that they might like to share about it? Thanks.

Hi Herman:
Where is the scratch located? If it's right in the center it might become more visible at smaller apertures, if it's off to the side it may never be visible. I would try to get the price reduced on account of it, but if it's just a small scratch as you describe it will probably not be a significant problem.10.
