Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. Hi ,do the site maintainers want pictures of any R ??I have the following lenses in R: 35/2.5, 50/1.8. 58/1.2 (worlds first SLR F1.2 lens!), 100/2, 135/2.5, 200/3.5 and the VERY HARD TO FIND R 55-135mm F3.5 Zoom. all with original cases except 135/2.5 9or was it 100/2??)
I see you have many of the FL lenses, but if you want i can send pics of my FL 55-135mm F3.5 zoom with its case and the FL 85-300mm F5 zoom also with its case (which looks like a small coffin!). Let me know with a post to this board or to cadillacmike68 at yahoo dot com.2. From : Rick Oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi Fionn:
I've never had an adapter like that one... it has a memory chip on it that can store data so that your camera will identify the lens when you mount that adapter (assuming that you always use it on the same lens). Normally the camera will say "F/0" for the lens speed and give no identification of focal length.
My guess is that this adapter will work but that you'll be paying for features that you don't need. Autofocus confirmation itself, in my own experience, was very unhelpful: the lights would come on just as I passed by the point of correct focus, so I'd back up and they'd flash as I passed it by again ... the result was painfully slow operation. I use plain adapters with no electrical contacts on them and do my own focusing. Nothing to fall off (the chips are glued on) or possibly be out of position and confuse the camera's circuits, and they are much less expensive. I would recommend, though, using apertures of f/4 and smaller unless you want to have a manual focusing screen installed in the camera.3. From : Fionn (fionn.mcarthur@btinternet.com)

Hi Rick
Many thanks for your reply.
Just wondered if yourself - or anybody else - could have a look at this adapter I've seen for sale. The seller warns they've never had a chance to test it with a EOS 30D. But surely if the technology works with one EOS model it should work with all?... or is that oversimplifying?!

Hi Eric:
The OM Zuiko doesn't fit directly onto any DSLR; but you can get adapters to fit it onto either an Olympus or a Canon. I'm not sure about other makes. When you use the lens on an adapter, you lose auto diaphragm operation. The camera's light meter still works in manual and aperture-priority auto modes.5. From : Eric (hery18@hotmail.com)

Hi Fionn:
I don't have a Contax adapter, but I have adapters for OM, Nikon, Pentax screw and Pentax bayonet lenses to fit the Canon. These are all inexpensive adapters, $20 and less depending on mount, and they are well machined of brass and chrome plated... the quality is fine. I bought all (I think) of mine from a seller named "Roxsen", but I believe they are typical of a number of sellers. I have no complaints.
From my personal experience, I would not pay the extra price for an adapter with a "focus confirmation" chip glued to it. It increases the price considerably, introduces some inevitable risk of the chip coming loose, and I found the blinking "was in focus just a moment ago" light to be particularly unhelpful in practice. I would, however, recommend installing a manual-focus type finder screen in your camera if you plan to do a lot of manual focus shooting. If you will only use manual lenses occasionally, then keep your standard screen ... but in that case, only use the manual lenses at apertures of f/4 and smaller for good results.8. Hiya
I am just getting back into photography after letting it slip for a number of years. I have a couple of RTSII bodies and associated lenses.
I've just ordered a Canon EOS 30D and have been impressed by some of the images that people have taken using this camera with the Zeiss lenses.
Can anyone recommend an adapter for using this body/lense combination? I've seen a couple on the market at £10 - £20. Are these reasonable quality?
Cheers

Hello Robert:
There are adapters available to fit a Canon FL lens to a Nikon body, but it's a very imperfect solution. The adapter contains a glass element to make the lens focus to infinity on the Nikon camera, and this element both enlarges the image (effectively increasing the focal length of the lens, like a short teleconverter) and also degrades the image quality. I don't recommend them. However, if you already have the FL lenses, and you're going to buy the Nikon DSLR in any case, then the adapter only costs about $30 and you can decide for yourself. You can find them on eBay by searching for "FD Nikon adapter". There are also adapters to use Nikon lenses on FD bodies, so make sure you get the correct type. I think in the end you'll decide that it's better to buy a new lens.
(The adapter situation with FD and FL lenses is not particularly better if you get a Canon DSLR, the basic problem is still the same; so this is not a factor in your choice of which camera to buy)10. Can any person give me this information please?
I am interested in the Nikon D5000 but would like to
use two lenses that I already have.
One is a canon zoom lens FL 85_300 mm 1:5
And a bellows fl design lens.
Both units are brand new being stored for 20 + years
Question Is their converter ring available?
If so where does one find this unit?
Thanks for your efforts.
