Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Sorry with the typo on the email earlier. Next, there is a silver version of the AF-S 80/200 f/2.8 - like the creator has commented, stupid move to follow Canon's design of the L white lenses. I dislike the idea too. Nikon is established enough to create its own product branding !

Kirk: As explained in that new site, there are two versions of the AF Zoom Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D one with One-touch Zoom and another with dual rings (the latter firms the basis with the AFS version later but internal optical composition is different).YEs, the AF-S is priced around USD850. The one touch AF-D should be less than USD600-00. The first version (non-D but Ai-S 0nly) should fall below USD450-500 then. I find the AF-D dual rings the best buy but ersonally, I like the one-touch zoom.

I have a newbie question: can a Canon FD lens (such as the 135mm F2.0) with auto aperture be used on an FD mount without AE capability - in other words, can the aperture on the 135mm f2.0 be set manually?

Thanks for you help, all information much appreciated.

By the way. Al, Nikon FA has a Message Board on its own. You should also ask the rest of the folks there. http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/messageboard/nikonfamsg//index.php

Nikon FA:- AL, if you are setting to "S" (Shutter Priority AE), naturally you won't see any shutter speed in the LCD. There is nothing wrong with your camera. Leoanrd has a Nikon FA site, you can refer to that site for more info.

I read your AF Nikon 80/200 pages with great interest. Question: is the single-touch zoom f/2.8D justifies USD600-00 ? I was offered one by a classmate of mine. The price at ebay (thanks for the link in your site) suggests the two rings type sells for USD800 now. IS there anything I should know what to look for or avoid in these two versions ? Is the newer usd800 worths the extra ?

a simple thanks for setting up this resource about Nikon equipment, I recently got a used SB28 and your online reference to it helped me to figure out how to turn off the "standby" feature, as I did not have a manual for it.

thanks again

Hi Kenneth:

Using an old Nikkor lens on a Nikon, you get automatic aperture but no metering of any kind.

Using the Nikkor with an adapter on a Canon, the aperture control is manual (the viewfinder gets dimmer as you stop the lens down) but you get full meter function in manual and aperture-priority automatic modes.

Of course, you don't get autofocus in either case, and manual focusing can be a challenge in an AF camera.

Send me an email (this is my real address) and I'll send you some sample photos plus pictures of the adapter itself, etc..... plus any other information you would like to know.
