Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Nathan: I use a Nikkor 500mm F8 mirror lens on a Nikon D70 which works great. I determined exposure starting with the sunny 16 rule (F16 with the shutter speed same as the film ASA) and then modified it using the image in the LCD. That lens works great mostly cause it has no aperture mechanism. If you can afford a 500mm F4 I'd recommend that over the mirror. For the rest of us I'd recommend the mirror over nothing. I also used an old Nikkor 300mm f2.8 which I got on eBay very cheap cause the seller was to lazy to try cleaning the glass. I mostly use it hand held wide open at the highest shutter speed possible. The prong was unscrewed off the lenses and then remounted reversed so that it doesn't interfere with the bottom front of the prism.
I've also used a 1000mm Questar which I got on eBay also cheaply. Like the 500mm this is has no aperture to worry about.
I tried a 55mm F1.2 Nikkor-S which won't even mount. I have a Nikon Bellows-IV which works just fine.
I'd recommend trying any lens you can't afford to replace or which isn't available anymore. Just be careful mounting it and be prepared to quit mounting the lens if it doesn't feel right mounting. There's a ton of gear out there for sale cheap by people going digital. Some day people are going to wake up and realize they dumped some good stuf. If you go to a concert why worry about the aperture on a 135mm F2, just shoot wide open and enjoy the results!
Good luck.3. From : Oliver Kassman (iconoclast_@hotmail.com)

I have a Sun Auto Tele-Zoom F:4.8, f=85 - 210, with a screw mount. Can anyone tell me anything about this lens (esp. how much it is worth, I work with a K-mount Pentax so have no use for this lens) Thanks Oliver4. From : Robt S Lane (rslane@optusnet.com.au)

Anyone out there know of a Rollei technician who can restore an SL66 eye-level meter to a working condition. I would be most grateful for any info. Thanks Robt S5. From : helena (helenarodriguez@email.com)

Mick - Sorry for the slow response. We get this question so much I think we're a little weary of answering! Try Googling EOS-FD adapter. There is a lot of info out there. Briefly, such things exist but they impose(IMO) nearly crippling limitations on the functionality of your modern camera. And for the price the good adapters bring, you'd be far better off investing in a modern eqivalent lens. Ken7. From : Mick Mason (inn.motueka@xtra.co.nz)

Craig, that doesn't sound so good. I'd contact the seller before anything else. If they won't make good and you decide to keep it, I would recommend a qualified repair person above attempting a DIY. Ken9. From : Craig Zander (craig_zander@yahoo.com)

I think I just bought a lemon.
I finally bought a used 28mm 2.0 Canon lens after debating whether or not to. So I get the thing in the mail today and the first thing I notice are those tiny bubble things inside the glass all around the edge. WHAT are those? and will they affect the picture?
Also, I hear what sounds like a tiny amount of sand inside the lens. Is that gonna be a problem?
I bought it from a "major" camera resaler, and I don't want to give names because some of us probably shop there, but I am a little upset seeing as how it cost me a pretty penny.
So, did I get a lemon, or should I start taking this thing apart right now or should I send it to someone who knows what they're doing?
