Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. I have to agree with Robert: the image is just a "speculation" of a lens that could have been designed but was never produced - but in this days an image - no matter how much fake it is :) - conveys a sense of reality.

I cannot help but wonder why you have included details of the mythical Canon 24mm/1.2 asp lens in your otherwise very accurate listing of FD lenses. If your Italian contributor wants to spend time producing hypothetical lens/glass specifications, so be it. To publish same in an otherwise technically competent web site is something else. In a few years time we will have people using the information on this site and quoting that this lens was definitely in production! In my professional career I have come across many instances of authors/contributors recklessly quoting 'facts' that are clearly wrong and could have easily been checked.

Please do not let the factual excellence of this web site become debased. I am quite sure that Canon could have produced a f1.2 maximum aperture lens; clearly at the time, cost or production criteria dictated otherwise.

In relation to your article on the AFD24/120mm. I can read your passion on the Nikkor lenses. http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/AFNikkor/AF24120mm/index.htm but the lens was a failure as far as I am concerned. Quote:- "... photography may NOT always be all about sharpness and resolution because that is simply the technical aspects of it. You will be lucky if a lens feature is there to serve and helps you capture an important moment rather than worrying what will be the resolution at the edges of the photo if I use the f/5.6 at 120mm, right ? .." Not quite right, I paid for expectation, and I do expect the lens to deliver the optical performance I paid for. The followed up AF-S IF-ED is far superior than the AF-D IF version. Forget about the backward compatibility, who cares with those oldies anymore ?

Update: Macro Divina of Italy sent me a page on the FD 24mm f/1.2 ASPHERICAL. I have included inside the FD lens pages and linked the page to his site in Italian.

It may or never had existed. Please read accompanied text (updated/removed following suggestions by users of this forum. Tks).

General observations on using Canon FD equipment: I am still using a lot of FD gear for over 25 years. I've had a number of photos in various magazines not all of them taken on FD equipment. Generally I tend to use Canon fixed focal lenses for optimum results, but have had an 'action' photo printed in a photo magazine, taken on a Tamron 35-70 zoom, (which netted me a large batch of free film). If I were to use 'other' lenses, Tamron would be at the top, but maybe others have had success with other brands. Having retired earlier at 60 recently, I intend to start up an 'imaging' business and my Canon gear will be right up in the front providing the images I intend to create. I hope this posting offers encouragement to all FD users.

Hi Paul:

My guess is that is either a D mount or a C mount lens for a 16mm or 8mm movie camera, respectively. I don't think you're likely to feel much like using either of those formats today; I think the 16mm film can still be found but I'm doubtful about 8mm. I don't believe there is any way to adapt the lens to any other type of camera, but there might be some video gear that could accept a D mount.

I have a question, I have some of my dad's old movie and film camera stuff, including a Kogaku Cine 17-70mm lens with a screw mount. Anyone know about that particular lens? What camera is it suited for?

Thanks!

Paul

That is a good start for Nikon folks. But at a retail price so high, this is not viable. But all things must have a starting point, as soon as it started to sell well in figures, they should know the lower end similar spec models should sell another 1,000% higher number in sales as not many general users can afford the asking price yet (I am one and I still have plenty of AI Nikkor lenses). Further, digital SLRs often depreciates like crazy after few years.

Nikon unveils their first full-frame D3 digital SLR. 12 Mega pixels Nikon D3. Good news is, all lenses (including the post 1977 Ai Nikkor manual focus lenses can be used !). Similarly, the new DX lenses also can (but only at 5Megapixels). You can read from the link(s) I provided up/down below there for more details.

or download a PDF file at

I guess this is relevant to this forum as the older MF/AF Nikkor lenses can be re-utilized again for digital imaging.
