Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. Greg Zeiss. Sigma are doing quite well. espesially if you step it down about 3 steps. In my opinion you can use Sigma for most general photography. Nikkor is better, but step Sigma down a couple of steps, and you would be quite satisfied with your pictures.

I am in the process of buying a Nikon N65 and am looking at 28-200 zoom lenses and I am confused on the quality. I am an amature photographer (pictures of my kids) and I really don't want to spend too much, but yet I want good quality. I am considering a Sigma Lens, but know nothing of Sigma's quality. Nikon Lenses are too expensive for me. Tamran is a little on the high end. Cosina is so cheap it makes me suspicious. AANy feedback, especially on Sigma?

Mike, My Canon Fd dealer catalogues from 1980 and 1985 lists 2xA and says 100mm or longer. 2xB is for 300mm or shorter. I own a 2xB. I use 2xB with Canon primes: 200mm 2.8 and 300 f4 with no problems resulting in a 400mm f5.6 and a somewhat slow 600mm f8. Also it says 2xA can be used with zooms that reach to 300mm. I think you want 2xB since you since are topping out below 300mm. I want to get a 2xA but am not in a hurry since I do not have a lense larger than 300mm yet. Also says 2xB is recommended for the 300 2.8, and if using 200 macro and extender then 2xA is recommended. (Note) my catalogue says 1.4XA will not work with some older FD lenses. None are specified. 1.4xA is designed to work with 300mm and longer, but not all Fd's I now see. Lindy

I'm confused about which Canon extender to use (2X-A or 2X-B) with my Canon f4 80-200mm zoom. I have a Canon lens booklet dated from the 1970's that say the 2X-A works with any FD telephoto from
100-800mm and with any FD zoom lens having 100mm within it's range.

However I read at this site that the 2X-B is used with any lens less than 300mm or any zoom with 200mm in it's range.
If both statements are true then I can use either, but I'm convinced one would be better than the other. Which one should I use?
Thanks,
Mike

Bind, you cannot use Nikon or Leica lenses on your Minolta cameras; only lenses made for Minolta (manual focus) cameras will work. These are available from aftermarket manufacturers such as Tamron and Tokina as well as Minolta itself.

Colin, whether your coating marks will affect performance depends mostly on how much surface area they cover on the lens. The nature of any effect will be in the form of increasing flare. The best way to check is to test it on film: shoot subjects containing both extreme dark areas and bright lights within the frame.... flare will be seen as light 'fog' bleeding over into the dark areas. all lenses have some; it's reduced by coating and increased by scratches, dirt, fingerprints etc on the lens.

I would like to suggest a very fine lense for anyone looking for a Canon compatible lense that covers a wide zoom range, produces quality photos, and is realativly fast. The Canon 70-200mm USM III is it. I have used it at many sports meets and I must say that it performed better than the athletes. I hope everyone may share the insight I have about this wonderful lense.

Thanks for a great site, I am a Canon FD user and have been offered a 24mm Canon FD optic in great condition at a reasonable price. One catch is that the lens has some coating marks, anyone know if these will affect image quality and lens performance ?

Thanks Colin

Hi.I have two Minolta SLR cameras,X700 and XD7. My whole lense collection consists of Minolta products. But what i was wondering was this;is it possible to interchange between brands? You see,i live in a rather small city that only has a handful of photo shops and most of them carry limited amount of Minolta lenses, most of which i already own. Most of the lenses for sale are by Nikon or Leica. So i was wondering if it is possible to use other lenses for Minolta and if so,which ones??! i appreciate any help.

I am committed to a Nikon D100 digital camera. I have a choice of basically two lenses that are in the price range: AF Zoom-Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF (3.5x) or AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6D IF (7.1x) .The prices are about the same, though the first is a used lens in top condition, the second is new. Since all of the pixs will be processed by computer (Photoshop 6 or 7) the second (28-200) seems more useful while the first (24-85) may be better quality/contrast. May I have your opinions? Oh, yes, the purpose is general photography with liberal aerial photography thrown in, in very close quarters (cockpits). Presently I use my Leica M6 with 28 mm Summicron, a 50 mm Summicron and ocassionally a 135 Elmar. I also realize that in digital cameras a 28 mm lens is equivalent to a (say) 42 mm lens in 35 mm photography but am not sure if therefore I would need a 18-20mm lend digitally to replace the 28mm conventional focal length. But all this is not the key factor in choosing between the above two lenses. What/which one would YOU buy? Thanx for the replies, Csaba
