Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. But if you want to leave a note on your experience visiting this site, you may use the MIR's MIR Guestbook | instead.

This is why I compare the lenses for different film formats
assuming the largest-possible crop with a 3:4 proportion. For
35-mm, this would be 24x32 mm; for 4.5x6 and 6x6, this would be
42x56 mm; for 6x7, this would be 54x72 mm. Assuming these as the
film sizes actually used for a 3:4 picture, you get diagonals
of 40 mm, 70 mm, and 90 mm, respectively.

This way, you get the following relations:

6x6 35-mm

40 mm 23 mm
50 mm 29 mm
60 mm 34 mm
80 mm 46 mm
150 mm 86 mm
180 mm 103 mm
250 mm 143 mm
350 mm 200 mm
500 mm 286 mm

Simply multiply the 6x6 value by 4/7 to get the 35-mm value.

hi thom:

it isn't an exact copmparison because of the difference in the shape of the negative, but the diagonal of the hasselblad is 80mm; that of a 35mm frame is about 44mm. so multiply your 35mm lens focal lengths by this proportion (about 1.8:1) to find the approximate equivalent lens in 6x6cm.

you'll notice the 80mm standard lens is a little wide by this standard; there are 2 reasons for this. first, medium format tends to be standardized on the 'classic' definition of a normal lens focal length being equal to the diagonal of the frame, while the 35mm normal standard is a little on the long side; and second, with the square format, MF images are often cropped so that only about 4.5 x 5.5 cm is actually used, with a diagonal of 72mm, or 1.6x larger than the 35mm frame.... for which, 80mm is a very close equivalent to the 50mm normal lens in the smaller format.

Hello, It`s great that you`re providing us (amauter photographers) with such a site where we can ask a question or request any information regarding usage of great leica products. My questions is the following. I purchased Leica 100mm F2.8 Apo-Macro-Elmarit lens on Ebay auction. The seller pretends to be original owner of the lens. Having been burned once ( I sent money but never got item) I`m asking you to assist me with this deal. I need to know serial numbers of the lens( and years that they were produced in) that I can use in order to check that the seller really owes the lens he`s selling. I have to submit payment within 24 hours. But I`ll not do this till I got a reply from youThank you in advancWaiting for your reply Rober

I have a question for anybody. I am searching for a comparison of medium format lenses to 35mm lenses. I have it printed out somewhere but cannot find it, Calumet catalogs used to have it but online it doesn't appear. What I am looking for is what 35mm lenses compare to the Hassey 50mm, 60mm, 150mm, 180mm, and 250mm. If anyone knows of a web site I would appreciate the help. Thanks, Thom

this diagnosis could be correct, but there are other possibilities: the needle might just be sticking to the bumper at the top end of its travel, for instance. nikons are known for jumpy meters in old age, so there could easily be more to it than that... in any case, it will require a disassembly to find out for sure.

Hi!
I have a Nikon EM and although it works perfectly in ever respect there is a slight gremlin - the shutter speed indicator needle is stuck at the upper position (above 1000th/sec on the shutter speed scale in the view finder). A couple of years ago it came unjammed by itself but has since got stuck again. A Nikon specialist told me the light meter needed replacing. I don't know if this is the correct diagnosis. Can anyone help?!!
Thanks!

Hi,
I have a Nikon 4004s, and I have a problem that I can't seem to solve. It does not advance the film. It makes the winding sound, but it doesn't take the film. Does anyone have any suggestions before I take it in to have it looked at? Please help :) Thank you very much. Mariya
