Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. I am not aware th FD-EOS was only for the tele-lenses where I thought it was meant for all across the FD line. Basically, I am using Nikon System. Decades back, Nikon also used to introduced an interesting accessory AF TC16 AF Converter. It doubles as a Tele-extender (1.6X ratio on magnification) but the beauty is, it "converts" the manual focus Nikkor lens into an autofocus lens (depends on Nikon bodies, some takes minimum f/2.8, some takes f/3.5 maximum aperture). Many of the newer models of Nikon DO NOT SUPPORT this TC-16 (for obvious reason, they want you to buy their new AF Nikkor). Both the FD-EOS and TC serve a stage in their lens/camera development. This is a good forum for exchanging info and knowledge. Great !

Jerry, as Robert pointed out the original Canon converter will work only with selected telephoto lenses. Its protruding optical element needs to fit the rear space available on some FD telephotos. Trying to use it on a lens it was not designed for may scratch the rear lens element and the adapter front lens.
The non-Canon adapters usually have a much simpler optical system just to take into account the smaller lens-to-film distance of the FD design, and therefore have no protruding element and should fit most lenses - but I'd be careful with some high-end lenses, i.e. some wide angles, that have almost protruding rear elements. Their quality is not on par with the Canon adapter.
There were also a macro adapter made by Canon, without any optics, designed to used macro accessories only and therefore not usable to focus at infinity.

Jerry,

One important point to be made first:-

The genuine Canon FD/EOS lens adapter is nothing like the crappy adapters routinely available today. It was specifically made to fit certain FD telephoto lenses. As has been pointed out it will allow one to attach other FD lenses to EOS bodies, however the optics were formulated for the specified - relatively expensive - teles. If you are lucky enough to own the genuine item, then you will just have to experiment and see what fits.

As for the poorly made modern copies, if you find an optically acceptable one, then again you will just have to experiment and see what fits and gives reasonable results.

May I ask a stupid question. I had a couple of lenses (FD and new), I assume many of those other than specified by Canon to use the FD-EOS adapter. I guess autofocus is off. But what are the chances of those lenses not granted officially use with the FD-EOS adaptor. This is the accessory:- http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fdlenses/fdeos.htm

I had spent a couple of days reading/going through the bagful of awesome content relating to the EOS-1n/RS site (by the way, you have selected a very good photos of invited guests as showcased in the site, making it better than Hove series). One of the most important issue relating to the EOS EF lens mount was not being addressed at the Technical issue section such as http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/eos/EOS-1n/Reliability/shutter.htm the lens mount had enabled Canon to design lenses of exceptional lens speed such as f/1.0 EF USM. I will see if I can compile some info for you as an add on to this incredible web resources. This is the BEST site on early EOS models that we can find on the Internet today, hopefully it will extend to the newer EOS-1 series models in the future.

Thanks for sharing your wisdom and I have to salute the dedication and personal effort into making this possible for all Canon folks worldwide.

regards from Cupertino CA.

I have a Canon EOS 630 that I have had since 1987 and I'm looking for the rubber ring that fits on the 35-70mm AF lense.

I have a Nikon F, serial # 6541772, and an FTN finder. I understand that I need to file down the Nikon faceplate so that the FTN will fit, but is it possible to get batteries for this? Would appreciate any suggestions! Clint

Note:- Nikon F has a separate Message Board at http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/messageboard/nikonfmsg/index.php Our friend, Rick Oleson may be able to help you. Rick also maintains the MBfor Nikon F there. Thanks.

By the way, is "Kakaman" Mr. Foo ? Just curious, that is all. NOTE:- Thanks for the kind words. It is just a nickname on the web. I was told by Chuck Hester later that "Kaka" means "shit" in Spanish. That fits.

By the way, I actually had uploaded some basic lens info on the FL series of Canon lenses but didn't actually provided the link as I am still not too happy with the quality of the content. But for those who may be interested, here it is: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fllenses/index.htm

This is interesting. I've been to this site before on and off and couldn't had missed the Zuiko as well as the wealth of info on the OM system. That was lovely. I used to own an OM1n, broken over time and had changed to an OM4Ti. All the equipment was stolen on a train ride in India. So, I actually took the chance changed to Nikon (currently using an AF F100 with oldies such as MF FM2N and series of lenses). But still, the OM system has its own charm (esp the compactness). Anyway - this site is simple marvelous with so many major labels being addressed.

Agreed. This was actually followed after the earlier info on the prototype Olympus MF ZUIKO 85mm f/1.4 at http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/olympusom1n2/shared/zuiko/htmls/85mm.htm

which seemed to be have more truth with the related articles and accompanied explanations with the page and hence I have decided to include it in as reading references for fellow users. Problem is: p- As I can't read Italian. Earlier I thought it was also a prototype until MARCO wrote to me that it was his anticipation work of a version if Canon was to prepare such a possibility. Thus, I re-corrected following the text in his mail which explained the event. Well, I read both Robert and Luigi's suggestion, so - I have removed the link as well as the related pictures from that page.

Next: For J. Casey:-
Basically, my duty on a development work of a featured site is to provide basic info on the related product (be it Camera, lenses or accessories). I don't like to use my convenience of a site developer to influence a purchase and/or disposal decision as it is a perspective as another user of the featured optical product. As much as I have tried to put it in a neutral manner to avoid such a scenario, but it will leave it to individual to use their own wisdom to evaluate the product on their possession. Personally, all optical lenses have their strength and weaknesses. Difference is just only how to perceive it to our own usage. The site, will try to stay as an information reference site only. In time to come esp. after long discontinuation, it will serve its objective to future buyer of these used equipment. Thanks Casey, Robert and Luigi.
