Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Hi,
Im new to photography and I inherited my dad's Nikkormat FT3.
Im interested in taking really closed up photo of objects however the camera only has a 50mm lens. Anyone has any suggestion what type of lens I need to get? Im a bit confused with all those lens out there. Ive been told not to get any of the newer lens because it practically useless for my camera. Also I'm in need of a flash for the camera as well. Hi Matthew:
As working on lenses goes, changing out the glass is about the easiest job there is. I would advise exchanging the ENTIRE glass set out of the lens, rather than just the one element, for best performance.
I haven't looked at the 28/2.8 particularly, but in general the front and rear halves of the lens unscrew from the barrel from each end. To reach the front cell, you will probably need to first unscrew the ID ring... for both of these jobs you need a spanner. You can buy these from www.micro-tools.com, the cheapest are about $15 each. Another thing I do is buy cheap long nose pliers and grind the jaws to fit various applications - these are quicker to use but they also can slip more easily so need to be used with extra caution. Once the ID ring is off, you may see more than one set of notches for the spanner around the lens..... go for the outermost pair, this will take out the entire cell instead of just getting one element.
The rear cell should unscrew similarly; you might have to remove the mount flange first for access. Take careful note of any pieces that you remove so that you get them back in right.
I'd start with the lens with the missing element, develop your technique on that before approaching the good glass. If you need help getting it back together, email me and I'll try to help walk you through it.
Good luck!

Greetings,
I have a nice Zuiko 28mm 1:2.8 that a friend gave me, only downside is it has a very stiff, and at one point rather grating, focusing ring. There is a ding on the mount near where the stiffness is. I think its been dropped.
I bought ($5) another similar lens that has a great mechanism, but one lens element missing.
Do you think I could take the lens elements out of the damaged body and put into the good body? Is this something a layman could do?
I have an exploded parts diagram, but that's it. Any special skills or tools needed?
Or am I just kidding myself . . .
Any thoughts are welcome!

Hi Mary: This is probably not a repair to attempt casually. Whether it's cheaper to repair or replace the lens depends on its age: a new 50/1.4 is pretty expensive, but older AI and non-AI versions can be found very cheap - probably less than the cost of a repair. If you're in a hurry for your class and need a lens, you don't necessarily need an f/1.4; you can probably pick up an f/2 or f/1.8 for less than $25 (again, depending on what series of lens you need).5. Hi Dave: Are you sure the Quantaray lens is made for the Minolta Maxxum? Quantaray lenses come in different mounts for different brands of camera - there should be some sort of marking on the lens near the mounting flange to give you a clue. If it's a Minolta AF mount, then you should not need any adapter. If it's not, there is no adapter that will make it work.6. From : Mary (Kutsumu@hotmail.com)

I have a Nikkor 50 mm 1.4 lens and noticed the aperature blades were not closing down. On inspection the stopdown lever was stuck open to F4 and would close down only when I pressed the lever to one side. Another words the "spring" of the lever as on my other lenses was gone. Is there a way to fix this myself? If not, can the repair cost be more than the lens value? I appreciate any suggestions as I'm at a crossroad of what to do and I'm in need of the lens for a class I'm taking. Thanks!7. From : dave (wingerz_99@yahoo.com)

Hi James: I can't imagine that that could be done for any cost less than the cost of replacing the lens. rick :)=9. From : James Traill (shof@bigpond.net.au)

Nico, I'm not very familiar with Nikon products, but click on the image of the Nikon lens above. Your question may be answered at that page.TomR
