Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. hello everyone here!

I read from this site that the fd lens 50mm f/1:2 seems to be a quite rare item.
I actually have this lens in excellent condition and I would like to know what would be a fair price for selling this item as I no longer use it since I have the f/1:1.4 version.
Talking of rarity, does anyone know how many pieces were released and was it sold as a kit package (with which body?) or as a single lens offer?

thanks

THANK YOU Mr Rick. I don't quite understand all the things that you have explained. But a school mate who is good at these said he knows what you are trying to offer (advices). THANK YOU, Sir.

I like long distance photography.
A native (NYC) New Yorker, I have discovered the fantastic architechtural and Art Deco details in NYC skyscapers, most of which "art" is out of sight and worse, ~out of range~ for ordinary street level photography.
I like the possiblities of shooting from the street with long "Legacy" lenses on my Evolt E510 and E3.

Far enough away (9th Avenue and 34th Street), the details of the Empire Saate Building for example come into sharp focus.

A Leica "R" f/4.5 350mm lens becomes a 700mm on my Olympus E3 DSLR, revealing details otherwise unattainable from the stereet.
The same goes for the Chrysler Building-etc.

That said, what OM Zuiko (legacy) long primes suggestions would you make for use with Olympus DSLRs?

Hi Caroline:

You can use a bellows with any lens to take close-up pictures. Some lenses will give sharper results than others ... a standard 50mm lens, like an f/1.8 or f/1.4, is not designed to give its best performance at extremely close distances, so stop the lens well down. You generally will want to do that anyway, because the depth of field is extremely shallow at these close distances and larger apertures do not generally make for good pictures.

You can also use telephoto or wide angle lenses on a bellows. The shorter the focal length of the lens, the greater the magnification that you will get from the bellows, so a wide angle will be for EXTREMELY close distances, the 50mm will be for very close distances, and a telephoto can be used for moderately close distances.

It is usually very helpful to use flash at these close distances, because it lets you use a smaller aperture and still get plenty of light. However, flash can be a bit difficult to handle this close, and you have to make a fairly complicated calculation to determine the correct aperture setting to use with the flash, unless you have Through-the-Lens flash control.

There are adapters that let you mount a lens backwards on the camera or bellows, and some bellows even have a filter thread built in so that you can attach a lens directly in the reversed position. Often, this gives greater magnification that the normal mounting position. Quality is sometimes better, too but ONLY in cases where the magnification ratio is greater than 1:1.... the normal lenses are designed to perform best when the subject is much farther from the lens than the film is, so if when using the bellows the subject is closer to the lens than the lens is to the film, then it is time to look for a reversing ring.

May I ask anyone has experience with "BELLOW" ? It is school works. Can I use a cheap 50mm lens (borrowed) on the long fan unit to shoot close up pictures ? I read the lens can also be reverse, what and how can i mount it on the unit ? The unit is a Nikon. The Bellow says PB6, I am using a FM2. Or any suggestion ? Thank you.

Hi.. just wish to thank you for providing the very useful DOF table for the rangefinder 2.5cm nikkor lens. I have been searching for this for a long time as the 25mm lens have to use the finder and no guide for focusing. It didn't come with the lens when I got it from the ritz cam. This is a lovely site on the nikon oldies and incredibly useful ! Thanks a zillion, leo !
