Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. Harvey: for prices look at current average prices on ebay, or onlòine resellers as www.keh.com. Some of the latter may buy your gear as a whole, or you can sell it on ebay or the like, but then it's difficult to sell it as a whole, you may have to sell separate items.3. Hi, Folks. I could use some help. I have a fairly extensive FD system to dispose of to allow me to move into a new digital system. I am not trying to sell it here but could use some advice on establishing a value and what might be the best way to dispose of it. I live in a small community and local dealers have no interest in a film system as a trade-in. The following is a list of what I have. Please help. I live in Ontario, Canada.

I am using a Contax bellows and would like to use the PC option. I understand that in fact the only lens for that is the hard to find 100mm 4.0 planar bellows lens since it has a larger image field. Are there any suggestions which lens could be used as well? In the manual of the bellows it is said that the 60mm 2.8 macro lens works on the bellows very well, but does that go for the PC corrections as well? I now use a Yashica 100 mm bellows lens but is does not have the wider field coverage. Best, Kees5. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Can someone enlighten me? Can my old AE-1 lenses be used on the new digital Canon SLR's? I was looking at buying a new digital and had heard they could be used but wasn't sure if totally right.7. From : Ken D (kdurling@comcast.net)

Yeah, I can see it. Kind of splotchy. Almost looks like chemical damage rather than mechanical (for example salt spray vs cleaning marks) but it's hard to tell in the photo. Also I have the impression that something like a tiny chip - like from wind-blown dust - can eventually peel into a splotch - once the surface integrity of the coating is broken. I could be wrong about that. Ken8. From : rick (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

this f/1.2 has a bit of both, but the front definitely took the worst of it. you can get a general idea of it in the photo at the URL above, though the coating damage isn't all visible. haven't figured out what would have caused it, i suspect mechanical damage from abrasion or something along those lines.9. Rick - I never cease to be amazed at how much damage a lens can sustain on the front element and still be unaffected image-wise. Not that I've incurred such damage, ;-) but I'be bought incredibly cheap lenses that way and they're fine! Got a nFD 24/2.8 for $35 because there was front coating damage and it was kind of a beater. It's one of my favorite lenses now! Of course the rear element is a different story . . . Ken10. Hi Klemens: To answer your second question first, yes, I think the Series E and the Nikkor 50/1.8 are identical optically. The difference was in a cheaper (and more compact) barrel construction in the Series E.
As for a comparison of 1.8, 1.4, etc.... I can't really say, I think they're both excellent. One thing that I CAN say from experience though is that the faster lenses are not lacking in contrast or resolution as they might have been in earlier times. I have a 50/1.2 AIS which I rebuilt from all of the rejected leftover parts after stripping down 2 examples to build one good one. The good one came out very nice, but I didn't expect much from the one made from leftovers: coating was badly damaged in front, there was a little edge chip in back.... it's one of those lenses I put on my FM2 to keep people from wanting to steal it. Much to my surprise, this lens proved to be not only sharp but contrasty in spite of its extreme speed and bad cosmetic condition. So, if you think you'd like the speed and don't mind the bulk and weight, don't be afraid of the faster lenses on the grounds of performance.
