Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. But if you want to leave a note on your experience visiting this site, you may use the MIR's MIR Guestbook | instead.

How can I tell if my canon fd100-300mm zoom lense is the L model or the FD that was produced later? I want to sell it but not sure which it is.. Thank you

TO UDO RODEMANN: 1) New FD lenses are identified by the absence of the chrome mount ring used by the older versions. The newer versions are also lighter and smaller lens barrel diameter - 55mm (old) vs. 52mm (new). 2) Most FD lenses were discontinued in 1992 while L-series FD lenses were discontinued in 1995. TO HOLLIS WHITEWATER: Your FD 80-200mm f/4 is an excellent zoom lens. The FD 85mm f/1.8 is of course, lighter and has a faster maximum aperture than the zoom lens but is it what you really needs? Both the FD 100mm f/2 and the FD 135mm f/2 would be better choices as portrait lenses.

Hello~~I have a Canon FD 80-200 4.0 that I like to use for portrait type shots. How much better is the Canon FD 85 1.8? Anyone have any inputs in regards to sharpness? Should I just stay with my current 80-200 4.0~~Regards!

### To Stan Parry ### I have the PC 28f2.8 SA for Leica. It is produced by Schneider Optics, and it is available in Contax mount as well as in Nikon F mount. Great lens, a must for those who are into serious architecture photography. The picture of the KLCC twin tower in the entry page of my web site was captured with this lens. See it http://www.mir.com.my/mclau/.

Two questions: 1) when Canon made two examples of a lens, how does one distinguish the old from the new for certain? (is there a serial no. reference somewhere, and 2) are any FD lenses still in production? I have an old A-1, with a 50mm f1.8, a 28mm f2.8, and a 75-200mm f4.5

Hi! I've just spent a small fortune on a new Leica-R system (R6.2 with 28/2.8, 50/2 and 100/2.8 APO). The 100 APO and 50/2 we know are superb lenses, but I would like to add the 28 as a classic 'dream' lens. This lens is a new version and its' performance is little short of superb - fully open at f/2.8 it is razor sharp, and sharper than my Minolta 28mm AF lens at any aperture, in the corners of the frame! It shows almost no improvement in stopping down. It proves you get what you pay for...
