Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. Dear Rick, thanks for the answer. I do know you - leo speaks highly of you. Whatever it is (on the BOKEH??), tiny improvement on the optic can make the manufacturer(s) to think as if it was a quantum leap in lens development. Actually I don't bother with the differences as they make lenses, they (regardless Canon, Nikon, Pentax etc.) supposed to make this better a few decades ago, but I don't think this makes a dicisive factor when buying lenses, huh ? By the way, I notice you are maintaning the Various Nikon Message Board, it is a great follow-up and extremely well maintained. Congrat !
Ting Shen: Although I don't use Canon gears but I do know the EF lenses sections are under development at this stage because I have been reading it ever since it was being created. I heard leo was complaining no one bothers to send him images of the lenses as well as experience by Canon users on those lenses. So he just paused and switches to do the AF Nikkor. He is away to Bangkok last week. Perhaps, sites like these require participation from the users as well. Well, may be give him some time to gather more materials before coming back to the EF. He can't stop right here too, right ? haha ..sorry pal.3. From : Ting Shen (tingshens@gmail.com)

Why? Strange, a bunch of EFlens are missing. Not to mention the EF50mmF1.0L, the EF70-200mmF2.8 LISUSM is also missing too... Really want to see them...4. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi JWoods:
"Bokeh" refers to the way that a lens renders those parts of the image that are not in focus. Some lenses show out-of-focus points of light as very soft, smooth blurs, while others show them as distinct, sharp-edged circles or even as donuts with dark centers and bright edges. These last can be distracting when you have a busy background, mainly because this same effect tends to show out-of-focus lines as double images. There are other possible distracting effects as well.
There is a common misconception that "Bokeh" is related to the shape of the diaphragm opening, with round apertures giving better Bokeh than hexagonal apertures. Like most easy, simple answers, this is not correct.... Bokeh is primarily a function of the optical design of the lens.
As all this would suggest, it is possible for two lenses to be equal in sharpness and contrast, but very different in Bokeh. Bokeh is also a rather subjective thing, not easily quantified and not generally included in lens tests or specifications.
I have brief experiment/demonstration of Bokeh at the above URL link.5. From : JWoods (centurywoodS@yahoo.com)

Robert has his own opinion to the new AF lenses. Better you think about, what exactly you want to do with the lenses. The "whichever is the better lens" question, is a endless discussion. One fact standing, the older Nikkors have the better BOKEH. Simply compare the BOKEH of a new 50mm 1.4 AF Nikkor with the 50mm 1.4 MF Ais or a Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm 1.4. The result of this compare is, that the new AF Nikkor has the uglyest BOKEH and the Carl Zeiss and the Ais has nearly the same. This test was printed for a not so long time in the japanese "PHOTOHRAPHIE" Magazin. The other is, do you like a lightweight plastic lens or a handmade heavy metal full glass lens? My choise is always the old lens. Do you know Mike Johnston? If yes, he has published a book via Lulu.com where he describe the BOKEH "problem" In this book there is a chapter with the name: THE GOOD OLD NIKKOR. Very interesting reading. He has also pulished a .pdf file with the actual BOKEH ranking of the lenses. Check this out, before you decide what you want to buy!7. From : Robert Glenn Middleton (the_redd_groyne@hotmail.co.uk)

The advent of the DSLR has added great impetus to lens design in recent years. The need to have 35mm equivalent coverage at short focal lengths, has led to the production of zooms with short focal lengths that were unheard of in the 70s/80s. Lens design and the formulation/production of optical glasses are in a continual state of advancement, in many instances this has meant a reduction in number of elements/groups it possible for the same optical performance. While the optical performance of some older lenses has not been bettered, in many cases their modern equivalents are not only optically better, but offer much better value
No matter who the manufacturer, the bottom line is price to the average consumer. With the introduction of engineering plastics has come the cheaper 'starter' range of lenses. I hesitate to call these 'amateur' ranges because personally, I do not think this gives a true indication of the intended customer.
Nikon wants the purchaser of a D40/D40x to buy/use Nikon optics from the start, so they have started to produce lenses that are cheaper. The reduced costs come not only from the use of more plastics, but from the advances on the optical side. With the continuing advance of optical design comes the inevitable sort production life. You get what you pay for, of course the more expensive ranges are better constructed, hence may last longer, however how many prospective buyers have this factor at the top of their list of questions?
Your comment about AF is another matter; it really depends on how you quantify the AF system from your particular, favourite manufacturer. As a professional user, I think Canon got the plot right when they introduced the EOS mount and abandoned the FD. The introduction of an AF system onto an existing mount is bound to limit the function availability on the older lenses. The Nikon system allows you to use far more 'older' lenses straight off than does Canon; however I would argue that as AF offers such an improvement, why continue with manual focus? One aspect that many users forget; with the new zoom ranges available, you can drastically reduce the number of lenses you have carry around or purchase initially.8. From : Marko (kensai@arcor.de)

Hi J.J. Yes, the older Nikkor Ai or Ais are generaly better the the new AF Nikkors. The new AF´s are made with plastic lenses inside, make the lens ligher and more advantageous for the user (so think Nikon). But the quality of these China Made AF´s is far away from the "old" Japan Made Ai or Ai´s. My referral, buy these old Ai, Ai´s lenses for your Nikon and have a lot of fun..

Question: generally, are older Nikkor lenses better ? I know the new AF Nikkor have more types in selection but why are they beng discontinued so fast while the older Nikkor can stay for so many years ? I felt the older lenses have better built quality but many cannot be used on the new Nikon SLR cameras (esp. the digital format models). Why are they making life so difficult for us ? cursed...10. Hey. I enjoyed reading the Canon EF pages. Very nicely done ! This forum is most useful. I just found an answer to a question that has kept puzzling me with the Canon EOS1n.
