Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. Okay, another question for everyone out there. I am using a 28-80mm Samigon lense on my OM-1. On some of the pictures it is leaving a small amount of vinneting in the corners...it is maybe only 1% of the picture and only on some of them. Any clue what might be causing this? I am not using any filters of hoods with the lens. Is there a chance that for some reason the lens is sitting a tiny bit to far from the film? Any way to correct this?

Thanks.

Adam: you can get a manual at www.canonfd.com.
The M blinks when the lens is not set to "A" (older version and some third party lens may have a coloured circle, it's the position past the minimum aperture).
Many 3rd party lenses come with different mounts, that's why you could have found different data about the Albinar, but mounting the wrong lens is not easy, especially with FD lenses whose mount design is quite different from other bayonet ones. Try to unmount your lenses. FD lenses have a collar to turn (older design), or a button to press before rotating the lens (newer design).

Hello, I just bought a T50 at an estate sale. It was only $30 U.S. dollars, which seemed like a good deal because it has a 80-200mm lens on it. Everything seems to work fine, but when I barely push down the button an "M" keeps flashing instead of a "P". After further research (the camera didn't come with a manual) it seems that I might have the wrong lens on it. Currently there is an ALBINAR-ADG 1:4.5-5.6 f=80-200mm 049 on it. I am getting conflicting data on whether this is the proper lens. Some websites say its for a canon, some say pentax, and others say minolta. Can anyone verify if this is the correct lens?

Also, I read some dis-heartening information that if the wrong lens is on, that it could possibly ruin the camera. Any information would be very, very useful to me, and I thank you in advance for responding. Please email me at the above address and put CANON T50 in the subject, (I get a lot of spam, and my spam filter is on.)

Thank you again,

Adam

Okay, great. Thanks for the info!

That makes a lot more sense to me. I couldn't really find any information on this before now. I am less worried about getting a one touch zoom now (and it seems like 4 out of 5 lenses in the 80-200mm are one touch).

Thanks again.

Matthew: one touch zoom have one ring instead of two. You focus turning the ring, and you zoom pulling/pushing it. Advantages: may be faster to use, because one has not to use two different rings. Disadvantages: may be less precise, while zooming one can change focus and viceversa.

I have somewhat recently gotten into photography a lot. My Dad gave me his old Olympus OM-1 that he bought in the closing days of college for him. With it he gave me a slew a accessories including a zukio 50mm F1.8 lens, a 50mm macro lens (unsure of F stop off the top of my head), and a vivitar 135mm F2.8 lens.

I recently acquired a Samigon 28-80mm F3.5 lens through Ebay. I like the lens quite a bit and it works well for me so far (only had the chance to shot a single 24 exposure roll so far). I got the lens partly because of the decent range of zoom and resonable F stop. Also because it has independent zoom and focus.

That is what I really want to ask about, the 1 or 2 touch zoom/focus. I am attempting to find (through Ebay or other places) a decent telephoto zoom from ~75-85mm to 150-250mm with no more then an F stop of 4 if possible. Something I have decided against is a variable aperature lens, not something I want to play around with.

The 1 touch zoom/focus though I have never really played with on any camera. How exactly does it work with 1 touch zoom/focus? Can you only focus on things close up with the wider angle settings and only focus on things at or near infinity with the narrower angle settings?

Thanks all.

Robert
Thanks for the explanation, you hit the nail on the head. Bringing the focus ring back up against the finger grips allowed me to change the mode from Macro to Zomm easily.

Thanks a bunch!

Bill

Bill,

Not sure how your lens actually operates. On many lenses of this type; when you press the 'white' button at the wide end of zoom range, you can then move the zoom ring further. This moves the internal 'zoom cell' to a certain position - giving you a close focus macro lens with a very limited focus range. Function will work on or off the camera and is fairly easy to set up.

I just purchased a Vivitar 75-210mm Macro Zomm lense for the Canon FD mount. I cannot change the lense from MACRO to ZOOM modes.
I use the pair of raised grips, pressing the white button on one of them and try to rotate the lens body. It will not move.

Is this mode chamge supposed to be easy to do?

Is the mode change independent of the camera body?

Thanks

Yeah, I'm sorry, Jack, but it sounds like you got hammered. I was just in some of those shops on Fishermans Wharf a couple of weeks ago and I didn't feel safe in there, and I know what I'm looking at pretty well. They have their routine down pretty well, if you want to get out with your skin it's best not to even make eye contact.

For all the bad press it gets in forums, it's safer to buy on eBay than most of those places.
