Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. Ray,
Make sure you heed Rick's advice, even if the quoted service prices seem on the high side. This lens is a valuable and desirable piece of kit - The f11 aperture is no problem in the DSLR world, it is the lenses relatively compact size (re conventional long telephotos) that is the great thing in its favour, plus the excellent Nikon optics.2. Hi Ray:
The easiest way to resolve this is to send it in for a professional cleaning and relubrication. It will cost you a bit, but very little in comparison to the value of the lens. You don't want to mess this one up trying to tinker with it.
There is an excellent directory of camera repair services at http://www.acecam.com/camera-repair-shops.html - it's orgainized by location so you can find someone close to you.3. From : Ray Hancock (pyroray@windwireless.net)

I have a 1965 Nikkor Reflex C 1000mm F:11 lens. I inherited it from my Uncle and it gave me an excuse to finally upgrade to a Digital SLR. Of coarse I wanted to use this lens and I figured out how to make it work on my new D-60. I have a reasonably simple problem with the lens, it has been stored obviously for a very long time, in fact it looks brand new. The problem is that the lubricant on the focusing ring is gummed up and it turns very hard. Can anyone give some input on the easiest way to resolve this?4. From : rick oleson (rick_oleson@yahoo.com)

Hi Quintin:
This will not be a complete list, but I'll give it a start. Your Canon FD lenses will fit on any manual-focus Canon camera made after 1970.
This includes the entire A series (A1, AE1, AV1, AT1, AE1-P), the professional F1 and F1N, the excellent FTb, TLb and EF from the early-mid 70s, and the newest are the T series of which the flagship is the T90.
They will not work on autofocus or digital Canon SLRs (the EOS series).5. From : Quintin Chisolm (qchisolm1@mac.com)

I have a Canon AE-1 Programable camera which I stupidly dropped on the floor. I have several lenses and would like to know what other Canon cameras they would work on.6. From : Glenn Middleton (the_redd_groyne@hotmail.co.uk)

Harry,
Are you sure this is a FD series lens? As far as I know the largest aperture on 80-200mm FD zooms is f4.0, there is on the other hand an EF 80-200 f2.8 L series optic.7. From : Harry (harryhole@btinternet.com)

Hi Rowan:
I don't have an idea off the top of my head, with an f/4 aperture it has to be a pretty valuable lens... that's certainly not something you encounter every day.
Being a CAT lens without a diaphragm, there is no difference between AI and NON-AI mounts ... that distinction applies only to the way the aperture information is transmitted from the lens to the body. So don't let anyone tell you it's worth less because it's "Non-AI".9. From : Rowan P. Smolcha (rpandmmsmolcha@gmail.com)

I have a Vivitar 500mm/F4.0 cat lens with a non-Ai mount in mint condition and operates perfectly. A monster lens w/leather carrying box. Have taken many wonderful pictures back in the 1970s. Anyone know who made this lens and what it might be worth. I would talk to a dealer, but will not be low-balled.10. I appreciate your expanded answer, using the marco was my main motivation, it works well with the digital and that is what I was after as my current macro made by sigma isn't acceptable. I guess I like the ability to take multiple pictures, discard the ones out of focus and enjoy the clear sharp focus of the older lens. I'll keep you posted as to how it performs in the future and how my many other lenses work with the adapter.
