Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. I just got a used F-3 with an MD4. It was working fine but since it reached the end of the role, 36 shots (no film actually in camera), it does not work. Well, what happens is, it takes a shot and is then dead but the right side led red light is on in the back of the MD4. And it stays on unless i rewind the motor. Also, when i press on the F3 shutter release, nothing happens. I can't even cock the film back manually since lever is jammed and i don't want to force it.
Free fish dinner in Yellowknife for anyone who can tell me what is wrong and solve this issue....

we have been very pleased with our EOS Rebel XSN; until recently; ishe acted like the batteries were tired, slowed film handling, etc.; so I've changed the batteries (twice).
The auto focus doesn't seem to work, lens will adjust to focus and then as you hold down the shutter release, it won't take the shot, and lens goes out of focus ... NO picture !
Suggestions ?? do I take it to a repair shop ? ...thanx !

As William is obviously very well established in his field, I assume his comments re Nikon pro/amateur lenses is in reference to optical performance, not a cosmetic appearance that indicates how deep one's wallet is!

I am not surprised that many lenses from the amateur segment of the market can offer similar optical performance to that of the 'professional' ranges. Also, why should we think that the amateur photographer warrants inferior optical performance?

Whilst there has been unbelievable advancement in computer aided optical design, I personally feel that the greatest advances have been in the production of optical glasses and the manufacture of the actual lens elements. Thirty some years ago I was involved in the design/testing of glass Fresnel lenses for use in railway electric signals (I produced all the photographic records of the testing etc.). The molding technique at the time, was not much different to that used to produce glass ashtrays for public houses and bars. In fact the main output of the production company was cheap molded glass housewares. From these crude beginnings, you are now able to produce precision molded glass elements at a fraction of the cost of the traditional ground element.

However the lens as purchased/used by the photographer is an assembly of many parts, not just pieces of optical glass. The amateur range of lenses will have had the mechanics designed and built to cheaper specifications and tolerances. Whilst the optical performance of many samples will stand comparison with the professional range when new, subject them to the daily wear and tear of professional use and then compare results.

Over the years I have acquired a number of lenses that produced superb results. However because of poor construction, sealing, or method of operation they have never been used in the field when a client was paying. A professional range offers much more than just superior optical performance, this is as true today as it was 20 or 30 years ago. You get what you pay for, but in today's world the differences in optical performance between ranges has become much more difficult to discern - especially from the large manufacturers.

Nice website. I have been using Nikon since the Nikon F3. I had two of those and I used them for a very long time for general photography and for weddings. A few years ago, I went to the D70 digital camera with the AF lenses. I now have two D70s bodies. I also bought a Nikon F6 and two Nikon F100 camera bodies which I use for spares. The F6 is the very best camera of them all.

My first AF lens was the Nikon 105mm F2.8 AF. It is beautiful and very sharp. Now I am all AF. I have the 20mm F2.8, 35mm F2, 50mm F1.4, 105mm F2-DC, 180mm F2.8. I only have one zoom. It is the aspherical 35-105mm F3.5-4.5. It is nice because it is push-pull to zoom and it does not flare. It is an outdoor lens and too slow to use indoors.

When I had the F3 camera bodies, I had some real nice MF lenses. I used the 35mm F1.4 and the 50mm F1.2 and the 85mm F2. The 135mm F2.8 and the 24mm F2 were a part of my wedding collection. I think Nikon is too slow to update their AF lenses and the fact that you cannot tell the difference from a pro lens to the amateur version is a pity.

Oh.. lately, the site download time is getting too slow for comfort when access from my place. I heard about the massive earthquake in Taiwan offshore which has literaly damaged 5/6 submarine laid undersea fibre optic cables to US and takes weeks to repair. Looks like it is still not done yet huh ?

I like the progress of the new EF and AF Nikkor lens site. How nice if the older manual focus version of FD and MF Nikkor were done in this new manner. The addition of guest photos is a good idea. Has been here since 1999 (still comes here on and off for references). It has mushroomed into an incredible good resource site now. Good !

CONTAX FLASH QUESTION
I am getting a Contax RTF540 flash plus the 540TLA adapter. Usage on the RTSIII and AX is pretty straight forward, although I don't know what the function is of the x-synchro contact (not the TTL-shoe contact) on the TLA adapter. Any thoughts? Can it be left off? If done so, is there danger of electric shock?

Any issues of using the RTF540 in conjunction with a TLA360? Would not expect it, but you never know.

I also plan to use this flash for large format photography. What is the best way to connect the RTF540 to a x-sync-only contact on a copal shutter? Thanks for your wisdom.

Please reply directly to photo@vetigastropoda.com Thank you.

Daniel

Thank you for a very informative site. I am an old (over 50's) film based photographer, who has found an Aladins cave full of cheap film in the NAFFI (Army Term for military shopping complex)/ I have a Nikon F601, bought cheap when the digital cameras started taking off in a big way. I am now moving onto purchasing a NEW D80 on special offer at the NAFFI with a 18 - 135 lens. My interest is in how many of my old lenses can I re-use, and daftest of all, I am trying to find out - will the new digital lens fit the old camera?

I have aslo asked this question at the Nikon Digital SLR board (hope you won't mind) http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/messageboard/DigitalSLRs/index.php3

Thanks again for an interesting and informative site. Roger - Roger J Canton
