Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. Hello from Bill, I love this Olympus Zuiko website. It truly is a superb reference point. I love Zuiko lenses. I've been using Olympus cameras for years . I know the OM10 can be temperamental, but I still have a body that works. I'm thinking of using my Zuiko lenses with the E420 body. Thanks for all your superb historical information and specification. PS, I know a bloke who has a 21 mm lens and I'm trying to talk him into selling it to me!! Cheers Bill Covington. - Bill Covington

Hi fellow OMers. I have an OM2 with three zoom lenses. I notice Olympus most are selling their digital portables. Q: are my old manual focus lenses usable on the their new DSLR? I think it was called E1. I have an offer but no lenses given. Thanks !

p.s. your OM site (Zuiko section) is fantastic ! I am from Inch'on, S.Korea.

Hi Bill!

I use my Zuiko lenses (and some others) on my Canon 400D with adapters, they work well. A replacement focusing screen helps, though... if you use the standard screen don't open the lens farther than f/4.0 for accurate focus.

Thanks for all the superb product information. I have bought two 'mint condition'
Zuiko lenses on Ebay. They are as follows, a 75-150 mm F/4 (£25) and a 35-70 mm
F/4 (£21). I still use my OM10 bodies and I'm thinking of using my Zuiko lenses on a Canon 40D. Cheers from Bill.

Hi Eric:

They don't make it especially easy to find, but there is a bit of information on the AE1 at:

http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/film/data/1976-1985/1976_ae1.html?lang=us&categ=crn&page=1976-1985

The AE1 is an excellent choice for a black & white photo class.

Thanks for the info on the lens cap. I didn't realize my camera was such an antique before I started exploring on the web yesterday and found your website. I was somewhat dissapointed that there is NO mention of the AE-1 (nor of the FD lens)on the Canon website at all. I believe my camera is in working order and will give it a test drive today, I used it fairly regularly after I bought it around 1984/85 but havent used it in at least 20 years. Hopefully it will be suitable for a black & White photo class I plan to take at the junior college this fall. Thank you again. If theres any other advice you want to tell me, feel free.

Hi Eric:

It depends on what lens you have. Early AE-1s usually came with a 50/1.8 lens with a chrome locking ring at the rear end; later ones had an all-black lens with a square chrome lock button next to a red dot at the rear of the lens. The earlier 50/1.8 takes a 55mm lens cap, the later 50/1.8 takes a 52mm cap. I believe that the f/1.4 lens takes the same cap as the f/1.8 lens in each case. If your camera has something other than the 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 lens, the cap size may be different.

I have an AE-1 that has been safely stored in a closet for years and it seems to be in good shape. I'm going to buy a roll of film and a battery to test it out to see if I can use if for a photography class later this year. I lost the lens cap to the FD lens about 15 years ago. Does anyone know a brand/model # to a replacement lens cap? I looked on amazon.com & canon.com, but none were too clear as to which caps would fit.

Hi Toni:

Sorry, no, there's no way to do that in any practical sense. It is physically possible to mount a Leica Screw Mount lens onto a Canon DSLR- the easiest way is to get an M42 lens adapter for the Canon, and then get an M39-M42 adapter ring to fit the rangefinder lenses into the adapter. The M39-M42 rings were made in Russia, to adapt early Zenit M39 SLR lenses to later Zenit M42 bodies.

What you're left with, though, is a lens that's sitting about 15mm too far from the focal plane, which means that it will only be usable for extreme close-ups. Most of your rangefinder lenses, especially high speed formulas, will not be at their best in this application. Still, the adapters are cheap and it might be a fun experiment.

Aloha Friends, is there a way to use all those rangefinder Canon lenses for my EOS-1ds? I like the 0.95 Canon and want to have a try out. Cheers !
