Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. Hi Nick:

The Nikkormat EL is a "Non-AI" body. As such, it can use any Non-AI, AI or AIS series lens as long as the lens has the "fork" mounted at the f/5.6 position on the aperture ring to couple to the meter pin on your camera body. With this wide selection to choose from, there are a huge number of good lenses of all kinds available.

I have a Nikon Nikkormat EL and was trying to do some research on weather there is a zoom lens that would be compatible with it. I have read a bunch of web pages and I am pretty sure there is one out there but was wondering how hard it would be to get one and where the best place would be? Also what lens would be the best? Thanks, Nick

Hello All, I currently have a nikon FE2 with various AI / AIS lenses. I am considering buying a D200 and was wondering if anyone has any experiences using the older lenses on this newer camera? How easy (or difficult) is it to enter the lens information into the camera? does the camera stop the lens down or do you have to use stop down metering? I am curious to know if it is worth the hassle or if I am better off getting rid of them all and replacing the lenses. That gets expensive!

Thanks

I was looking over your FD 50 - 55 pages. I have an early FD 55 F1.2 known as the chrome nose. Would you like a photo of that? Donald

Ivo: look a couple of post below :) When Canon moved to AF, they changed the lens mount totally. Its diameter became larger, mechanical coupling were substituted by electrical ones only, and film to lens mount distance increased. There are sound technical reasons for such changes, but it also mean the new EF mount is totally incompatible with the older FD, FL and R. The electric coupling means the camera can't set the aperture on a mechanical lens. Only manual stop down could work - with all its limits. The increased film-mount distance means older lenses can't focus at infinity - any adapter needs to work like an extender, increasing focal length and reducing image quality.
Therefore, using FD/FL lenses on a EF camera is - IMHO - just a waste. Go for an EF lens, they also take advantage of all the recent improvements, like image stabilizers, and reduced cost of aspherical lenses and the like.

Neal: there are several factors to take into account. The bird size - a pidgeon or a robin? - and how close you are able to get.
Also, birds usually move fast enough, and fast shutter speed are needed, therefore lens maximum aperture is important.
Usually, for such kind of images you would need a 400mm at least, or a 300mm with a 1.4/1.5 extender. You could try with a 200mm, even a zoom and a 2x extender - but you will get a small max aperture and lose something in overall quality.
There are reletively cheap 400mm from Tokina or the like, although even a FD 400/4.5 could be bought at around $300/400.
But I am afraid the T50 is not the right camera for such a task. With its programmed fixed shutter speed/aperture couples, it won't let you open the aperture to gain a faster speed. It wasn't designed for that.

I have a Canon T50 with a 80-200 zoom lense(I guess that's what it is). My knowledge curve on photography is limited... I wish to take pictures of birds from a tripod. What lense do I need that can make the object "bigger than life". The pics will be from 8 ft to 20 yards away. Any help is appreciated. Oh, I also don't want to invest mega $$$$$$.

Doug: no. The EF mount is totally different.

Are my old Canon AE-1 lenses compatible with any of the newer digital cameras?
