Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. First the good news: there is a German firm (HAMA) that makes an adapter, and it is available in the U.S. - I actually bought one at Adorama - they sell it under their "ADOR" house brand name. Price ~ $30 if I recall correctly.
Now the bad news: Because the EOS cameras are "thicker" than the FD cameras, there is no simple ring that would allow attaching an FD lens and still be able to focus to infinity.
There is a simple adapter ring - called a "macro ring" that lets you use FD lenses, as long as your subject is reasonably close.
The HAMA adapter I mentioned first, is actually about a 1.2 x teleconverter, i.e. you are going to lose about 1/2 stop - i.e. your f8 500 will become a f9.6 600mm lens.
None of these rings has a diaphragm coupling by the way, so all FD lenses need to be used in stopped down measuring mode. Since your catadioptric lens has a fixed aperture, that should not concern you, however.
Good luck

To Victor:
It's not possible to move the apertuering on FD lenses when they are detached from the camera. When detached, they show a relativly small apperture ring. As you turn it into the camera mount the appertur opens to full opening.
The older breech lock lenses have full opening also while detached.
Test the aperture movement under exposure as follow.
Attach the lens to the camera (without film)and open the filmdoor.
Set the shutter speed to 1/1000, and the apperture to smallest apperture (exc. 22). Look through the camera back door and keep the camera against the ligt. When releasing the shutter, you will se the significant shape of the very small aperture if everything works properly.3. From : Victor (victormilin@yahoo.com)

Canon FD Zoom Lens Aperture Question-
I purchased my 1st Canon FD lens, a 75-200mm f4.5 zoom, as a gift for a friend. Unlike my Nikons and Minolta's the lens' aperture ring does not open or close the blades. Since I can't well attach it to her camera to see if they open when attached to her camera, I was hoping someone could advise me as to whether this is just be a property of this lens or FD lenses in general or if I need to return it.
Thanks
Victor

I just bought a 1973 Canon FTb-N with a FD 50mm 1.8 S.C. lense. I own two Nikon cameras and I am not really familiar with the Canon lense system. I am looking to buy a zoom lense for my "new" purchase! If you can provide me with any information via email about the type of lenses that are available it would be highly appreciated! Thank you!

I have a a Canon 500mm f8 Reflex lens that I wish to attach to a Canon EOS camera body. There are adaptors around that can do this but does anyone know whether this particular lens can be fitted and if so, whether the result is worth the extra expense.
Thanks.

Hello,
I want to add a 300mm to my FD system. I can buy a FD 85-300mm f4.5 in good condition. Does anybody have any experience with this lens? And how does it compare to the FD 300mm f4.0 lens. I've read the specs on the FD-lens pages and based on this information I came to the conclusion both are pretty good. However I would like a ''user's report'' about the FD85-300mm.
Thanks for your information

Dave: The time I asked my camera repair guy about repairing a manual focus lens he said the cost was not worth it unless it was a very expensive item. The problem I had in mind at the time was fungus on the rear element. It sounds to me like your zoom lens is just plain worn out.8. From : Don Bolstad (don@bolstad.ws)

I recently went to the grand cayon & took many photos with a vivitar 24mm 2.0 using a PL & super hmc uv filter using a canon ae1 program. The pictures came out lite missing alot of the color. So I guess I messed up. Does anyone know if a different type of wide angle lens would have been better? Suggestions would be very welcome.
