Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. I have come across a couple of Nikon Teleconverters in very good condition. I have a TC 300 and a TC 2. I have been able to find specs and info on them but since I have no appropriate lenses to use them on I want to sell them but I have had no luck tracking down any prices or indication what they might be worth. Can anyone help me out with an approximate value for these.

Thanks

Jim,

Simple answer is yes, the adapter just replaces the eyepiece. Your problem arises in making sure the spotting scope you purchase has a removable eyepiece and adapter available. I cannot be specific about any present day models - I have three Nikon scopes from the 1970s - 1990s, all complete with various camera adapters. I suggest you start by searching the present Nikon products, to find out just what is available from a top manufacturer. Once you know what is possible, start looking for similar products in your price range.

Hi. I have a Nikkor 28mm - 200mm AF-D lens, which I used to use with a 35mm Nikon F80 (N80 in US). I haven't used the Nikon F80 for years, having gone digital with a Nikon D40X, and only recently dug out the camera and lens. What I want to know is: is this lens compatible with digital SLRs? Can I use it with my Nikon D40X, or indeed any other digital SLR camera? Thanks.

I have a nikon fm2 slr.
I am currently planning to buy a spotting scope for wildlife.
Do I have the option of purchasing a spotting scope and an adaptor to mount the camera to the spotting scope?
Any and all info would be helpful

Paul,

There is a cheap solution to your problem, which I find works well for this rather specalised subject. Get yourself a manual M42 mount long telephoto lens and a M42 to Canon EOS mount adapter. I have used the following lenses and obtained good results - Meyer 400/5.5 Telemegor, Meyer 500/5.6 Orestegor, Enna 600/5.6 Ennylyt. There are also some Kilfitt Kilar long teles that give good optical performance. You will just have to search the second hand lists etc, because there are many other suitable makes on the market.

The fact that you have to manually set focus and aperture is really not a problem - If you take your photographs from a few fixed vantage points, you can soon work out various ideal distances and learn to pre-set focus very quickly. I also support the lens (if needed) by resting it on a small shot filled bag, that is attached to an extended tripod.

These lenses are so cheap that a little experimentation is well worth the effort. They are both light on the arm and the pocket - something that their modern, all singing and dancing counterparts definitely are not - on both counts!

Hi,I am looking for some help and advise. I have recently purchased a 450D Cannon Camera along with an 70-300 zoom lense, my hope was to photograph wild birds from a destination in front my house that has a small lake in-front of it, it recieves a huge amount of birds of pray including hen harriers and the like and i thought that this lense would give me close ups of the birds, but i am finding they are to far away and when i try to increase the magnification on the camera it pixelates out. Could anybody advise what bigger lense i could try that woud say double the distance of the lense i have already? I cant get much closer to the birds without scaring them away thanks in adavnce. PS
