Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Hi. I just bought a Minolta XD7, which is the same as the XD11. Can anyone tell me whether the following are compatible with the XD7? The Sigma 80-200 mm F /3.5~4 zoom lens. Thanks, PK

I have a newer Nikkor zoom lens that I use on my Nikkormat that has the "post" system for metering. I need an adaptor that will fit the lens that has the "U-shaped" device on it that will couple with the meter. Any suggestions?

To Tony Ireland: I had an old Vivitar Series I with the same problem; sometimes it is due to the degradation of the Canadian Balsam or other glue used to cement the lenses. Have a nice day! Jaume

Can an AF D lens be used on a Nikon FM camera? I know the camera uses non-AI with its lever, it uses AI and AI-S, but do the D lenses work. Since it is a through the lens metering system, will the D lens be usable with the camera's metering system? Thanks

Hi Deva, Re: your wide angle lens choice....In my opinion I'd opt for the 20mm 2.8 AIS. It's a terrific lens that gives you a little more coverage than the 24mm, but you couldn't go wrong with either focal length. Specifically, the AIS version has what Nikon calls "CRC" which allows close focusing down to less than 12 inches. I think optically it is a better choice than the other 20mm versions you mentioned. Let me suggest a good source for reading about Nikon products:"The Nikon System Handbook" by Peterson. I have found it to be very helpful in making choices about buying lenses. However, if your local camera shop has a good used department I'd go and check out the lenses you mentioned and see what they look like through the view finder. You can't beat a good "hands on" demonstration. Load some film in your FE and take some pics outside the store with both focal lengths and see which lens suits your needs. Good luck! Russ Seuffert

hi jeff: you don't need an AI-S conversion, just a conversion to AI. here's a guy who looks like he will do a very nice job for you: http://hometown.aol.com/wdshpbiz/AImod.html rick :)=

Is there anyone still doing conversions of Nikkor lenses to AI-S mounts from mounts that predate the AI series? Or is there anywhere I might scare up an adapter/converter? I came into some great lenses but they don't fit my FM2. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Jeff

Hi everyone! I currently have a Nikon FE and a Nikon N80. I'm really interested in some landscape shooting and I'd like to get a wideangle lens for my camera. Even though I know it'd be more convenient to get an AF lens so I could use it on both cameras, I'm drawn to the sturdier construction of the MF lenses. With that said, I'm considering (all Nikon lenses, of course): -20mm f2.8 AIS -20mm f3.5 AI -20mm f3.5 AIS -20mm f4 AI -24mm f2 AI -24mm f2 AIS -24mm f2.8 AI -24mm f2.8 AIS - As you can see I'm looking for TRUE wideangle coverage, not a 28mm! I really want excellent optical quality. Is there a difference between the AI and AI-S lenses? Which of the lenses listed above do you believe are the best? Thanx!

Dear Mary Bruno: Rick's suggestion is a good source but the manual is specifically for a Nikon F2A camera. Well, here at this Malaysian site does have everything you need to know about your camera. All you need is a little patience to read through the pages. See:
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/nikonf2/index.htm
To be more precise, you camera may have been a non-Ai Nikon F2. The F2 has many models (check the viewfinder (near the lens mount if there is a "A" or "AS") if it doesn't, the camera may be a plain Nikon F2 (Flat finder), Nikon F2 Photomic (Finder with meter but non-Ai), Nikon F2S or Nikon F2SB. if the S/N supplied is correct and if the original owner didn't changed the finder it could well be a Nikon F2S. You can refer the various Nikon F2 models in the site to find the correct match. As there are individual instruction manual for respective Nikon F2 camera model supplied in this site, you can use the one that best match your camera model then. Other information published are relating to its history, background and various accessories that you can take advantage of to enhance your camera system - should one day you are getting serious and want to pursue more in photography. It is a lovely and rugged mechanical camera and needs no battery to work on (it is used to power the meter in the finder for metering guide so you can at least have a reference to take pictures with good exposure). If you have any further questions, do use the dedicated Nikon F2 MB to post them: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/messageboard/nikonf2msg/index.php3
Cheers.

Hi Mary: Your camera is a Nikon F2, and it is indeed one of the best 35mm cameras made. It was Nikon's second generation top-line professional model, after the original Nikon F of the 1960s. Yours probably was made in 1973. You can find a free copy of the owner's manual on line, here: http://members.fortunecity.com/canoneos/manuals/nikonf2a.html There may be some detail differences between your camera and the one in the manual, as there were some changes in the viewfinder and metering system (a removable/interchangeable part of the camera) over the years. For the most part, these are minor changes that you don't need to be too concerned about. Regardless of which version of the F2 you have, it will accept any AI series Nikkor lens. The earliest examples can also use the older, "non-AI" lenses, and the later ones (which cannot accept "non-AI" lenses) can accept any later Nikon lens including the current AF lenses. rick :)=
