Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. Hi KT: You are correct: you CANNOT use stop-down metering with a newer (AI, AIS or Series E) lens. With these lenses, the coupling ring tells the camera that your lens is stopped down "X" clicks from the wide open position. When you press the DOF button, the camera still thinks that the film will see "X" amount less light than is coming to the meter cells, and it will therefore make an incorrect exposure.

Use stop-down metering ONLY with older, non-AI lenses.

Jerry: FD lens with a chrome ring mount will work fully with your T90, exactly like newer FD without ring mount. Older FL lenses will require stop-down metering. It's easy to tell which type it is, because it's written on the lens itself, around the lens or on the barrel, depending on the lens, something alike "Canon Lens FD 50mm 1.8"

Is a chrome ring (I guess after reading the site, they are older type with a silver ring near the rear section) Canon Zoom suitable to use on the Canon T90 ?

Do I need to perform Stopped Down meter ? I read newer lenses used on the old Canon has to perform this task. I saw three of these lenses were selling very cheaply in a local retail store. The shop assistant said they are okay (except one with a broken rear ring). Just wanted to be sure. I got mine T90 last week. LOVELY CAMERA ! Awesome look (my last Canon was a QL) !

Dear Rick:- Just curious. I have compared my F3 with a 70-210mm f/4.0 E zoom. By depressing the DOF lever, I metered - the results are not the same with the normal meter (by 3 stops). So, this is not good (or accurate) for DOF with the newer lens (I assume).

Hi KT: Oil on the aperture blades is not normal. It may not cause any problems for some time, but eventually you will have to have it cleaned.

Hi jrmrp: I don't know just what your AF zoom is... there was one, with a pair of rangefinder windows in the front, that can provide autofocus on any manual-focus Canon body, and there was another (marked "FC") that was made for the T80, which will work but not autofocus on other manual focus Canon bodies such as your FTb and A1. None of these lenses are compatible with Canon's digital cameras. Those take the later "EF" autofocus mount.

I have a 50-200mm ef-l zoom lens. recently i notice there is some oily reflection on the diaphragm blades, is this normal or oil (lubricant) leakage ? if it is not normal, thinking of sending to service.

Hi.. this is a good board. Can I ask a question ? you see I have been using a Ftb for many decades. Recently, I saw a Canon A1 which was reconed for sale. I took it and find myself have to look into the newer series of canon lenses. I got a 28mm, 135mm and 2 zoom (80-200mm + a AF 3570mm f4 power zooming lens). Q: can provide an idea which should I add and does my Af zoom be used on the digital ?

I apologize for any messages that may have been lost in the past few days; I don't think they were deleted, there have been some server problems. It all seems to be fixed now.

Sorry, Timorthy if any of us had deleted the post (we will be more careful with this). Pentax is one of the major Company of SLR producer, so I think it is good to note its capabilities in terms of lens compatibility. IN relation to your Question: basically, Pentax said: " ...Type/construction - Pentax KAF2 bayonet stainless steel mount; Usable lenses - Pentax KAF2, KAF, and KA (K mount, 35mm screwmount, 645/67 med format useable w/ adapter and/or restrictions); SDM function - YES; Power zoom function - n/a...". Well, I think the best is to download a copy of the instruction such as the very impressive K10 and take a look what it says with the lens mount and system with back compatibility issue (HOWEVER, since the K10 is a higher spec Pentax Digital SLR model, some of the entry models may not share the same spec, so, I would suggest you to check on with the model that interests you):
