Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. I have a Nikkor-SC 50 mm 1.4 #1284163 that out performs any of my newer Nikkor lenses. Can anybody tell me why ? I bought it new in 1972 and it's my sharpest lens, and after 30yrs I've had a lot of lenses.

Hi, Does anyone know how to remove the shutter speed dial on a Canon F1 (old model)? The repair manual that can be found at MIR?s and Christian Rollinger?s websites shows a round leather piece that covers a screw, but at my camera there is no access to this screw since it is covered by solid metal. Thank Per-Olov

hi jeff: obviously something's screwed up in there.... pretty unusual too. the aperture has 2 mechanisms, one which selects th aaperture and another which actually stops it down to that selected aperture. usually the selector is fine but the stop-down mechanism fails, resulting in overexposure; yours is just the opposite. my guess is that something has gotten loose or maybe bent in the selector mechanism and it's stuck at f/22. it shouldn't be a difficult repair, as zoom lens repairs go (unless something's BROKEN, in which case it's probably toast). i would take it in for service, i don't generally advise zoom lenses as do-it-yourself projects and i think you can get this fixed without spending an arm and a leg. rick :)=

Rick and others, This is in response to messages posted earlier (around #21 I think). I have gotten the roll of film back to see the comparison shots of the camera in full auto and in aperature priority mode (canon A-1). I am not sure what the problem is exactly, the pictures from this lens are dark and not very sharp at all. I think that the lens is worth a small investment, it is a Vivitar zoom 1:3.8 with macro function. The pictures taken with the A-1 in aper. priority mode are still dark with the exception of shots near F22. Upon further examination of the lens, the aperature blades do move to the center when the camera is put in stop down mode (near F11~F22 I would say) but the blades do not move from that position when I change the aperature on the lens. It seems that the aperature setting on the lens does not work (all of the test shots are dark) and the only setting when selecting aperature from the camera that works is around F22 (not sure why F22 picture does not come out good when set from the lens). Obviously there is something wrong with the aperature mechanism. Any ideas?

It seems like this lens only comes in auto-focus could this lens be used on my FM2 and if so is there any disadvantages. I also would like to add a teleconverter to it any info would be appreciated. Thanks for your time and hopefully your input, MIKE
