Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. I have a Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4s MK1, bought new in the eighties. I borrowed recently the highly acclaimed new Nikkor 50mm 1.8 D from a friend for comparison.
At 1.4 my old Nikkor is quite soft, at 2.0 both are almost the same., from 2.8 on there is no visible difference in resolution or sharpness (100% on ps CS5)on a Nikon D300; so I am not going to buy the new 50mm f:1.8 as planned, as it is not really better than mine, contrary to your comments on your nikkor 50mm page.2. Hello, I have a question regarding compatibility of a Nikon AF 105mm 2.8 D Micro lenses and an AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III. I currently own a Nikon 80-200mm AF-S f2.8D lenses and considering purchasing a TC-20E III Teleconverter to extend the lens to 400mm. My thoughts for the Nikon AF 105mm 2.8 D Micro lenses and the AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III combo are, to increase the magnification beyond 1:1 and with the added benefit of longer camera to subject distances. I am aware the auto-focus function will not operate with the macro - Teleconverter combination. Will all other functions work? I.E. 3D metering and TTL flash?
Bob

Hi Steve:
I'm not a Minolta user, but I think the Minolta AF (Maxxum) lenses can be used on the Minolta/Konica/Sony DSLRs without an adapter. Because the AF body is about 1mm thicker than the older manual focus Minolta body, it is not possible to make an adapter that allows the older lens to get close enough to the film on the AF body to reach infinity focus.6. Does anyone have info or link list on what older/new lenses will fit on a Minolta Maxxum 7D DSLR without using an adapter....I have an older minolta xg1 also, but the mounts are slighlt smaller in diameter than the 7D... does an adapter work for those lenses I would assume that no auto focus functions would work with an adapter yes or no????? I would like to find lenses that fit the 7D and work correctly Thanks!!!!7. From : Ray (medjugorje@live.com)

Hi,
I'm trying to find a replacement for my Nikkor AF 28-105mm f/3.5~4.5D IF Macro lens that will work on a d5000.
I do a lot of traveling and for because I travel lightly, for years have just carried a d100 (and later a d200) with my favorite lens of all time: the 28-105mm which is lightweight and adaptable with a zoom and macro capabilities. I just purchased a Nikon d5000, and would like a good all-around lens I can auto-focus on the camera. My ideal lens would include macro functionality, zoom, and light weight.
I've been considering the 18-105 but it is larger, heavier, and doesn't focus in as close as my 28-105. A friend suggested the 16-85mm VR, which also struck me as heavy and didn't focus any closer than the 18-105. I know my other option would be to just get a d90 and continue using my 28-105 but I'd like to give the d5000 a try.
Anyone have any other suggestions? Thank you in advance!10.
