Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. But if you want to leave a note on your experience visiting this site, you may use the MIR's MIR Guestbook | instead.

Basically/generally, anything levers or button presented on a zoom ring or focusing ring MAY has one of the three purposes. 1) LOCK - it stops at a preset distance or zoom / focal length - in order to allow the photographer to straight reach the preset / desired setting. 2) MACRO release button, it depends on how the optical / mechanical structure of the zoom lens was designed, depressing the button will extend the lens to ultra-close distance / magnification from the standard closest focusing distance. (Generally, newer series of lenses usually has a MACRO index line printed on the lens barrel as visual indication once you are released into the Close-Up distances, older lenses MAY not has such index indicator). 3) AF/MF activation / releases. I guess the 2nd could be th most likely usage. One of the photo shown of the said lens also has a larger chrome knob, it is a tripod release socket for releasing the collar to vertical or horizontal format shooting. (http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fdlenses/fdzooms/85300mmf45old_C.JPG) I can't figure out which or what exactly is the picture you asked for. May be publish a photo with a indication marked can help us understand the button or lever you are referring to. Thanks.

If anyone out there has some hard experience, actual factual work to backup the use of FL and/or FD lenses on Canonflex, and would care to share it, I would love to talk with you. There seems to be so much conflicting input! Some say no problem, others say damage will be done. Thx, D

Reply to Les,
Canon FD 85-300mm f4.5 SSC,
I looked at the link you sent and I couldn't find the information about the chrome peg. This peg is not on the mount but on the zoom ring. It is to the left of 85mm, it seems to be attached to the zoom ring and moves with it as you rotate the ring and you can't push it it or move it in any way.
Look at the photo, bottom right of this link and you can see the peg on the zoom ring, on the left side of the lense.

Hi Tom:

No, sorry, there are no digital cameras that will accept your Canon FD lenses. There are some adapters available, but they have a glass correcting element in them to make the lenses focus to infinity on the thicker DSLR bodies. In addition to making the adapters pretty expensive, these lens elements tend to degrade the quality of your image as well as narrowing the field of view of the lens. Overall, it's not a good arrangement.

Site progress update 02.01.2008: I have uploaded a single page summary with updated content and images (116k HTML) file on the older Canon FL mount lenses, a link is provided at the bottom section of the main index page at http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fdlenses/index.htm

for direct access, copy and paste
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fllenses/index.htm
it requires some patience to wait for full page downloading..as info on FL mount lenses are scarce, it is just served as an info based site.

Too bad... MOST* Zeiss lenses are produced in Japan, Jes.

I didn't know the Carl Zeiss T* has lenses for Nikon ! Sure ? That is new to me. Why they produce the Nikkor MF mount and not doing the AF Mount, that doesn't make sense. Last, are they implying "ours" (German) are better than "theirs" (Japanese) ? haha..
