Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Hi Niu:
Absolutely! Your camera was made for the original, "Non-AI" series lenses, but it can also use AI and AIS series just as well.
The only thing to look for is the silver "fork" attached to the aperture ring of the lens.... this couples to the light meter in the Nikkormat. You can use later (Series E and autofocus) lenses but they will be less convenient, and of course you don't get autofocus if you use an autofocus lens on the Nikkormat.2. From : Niu (ask@QQ.com)

I was given an old Nikomat camera (i think it is a ft2 as compare to the info the site given here). The issue on the Ai- non ai stuffs is confusing. Q: Can my camera use the old nikkor (manual focus) ? as they are so much cheaper at ebay now. Tks.3. From : Casey (techpuffs99@gmail.com)

Yeap. For those who may be owning both MF and AF Nikkor, the D200 seemingly is the best value DSLR with a Nikon label now. Like the F100 which based on the F80 film camera, it has most up-tp-date Nikon features one would expect them to be inside. Except for the price and the 10.xx megal pixels (I thought it should have been added with 1X from the D100) then it would be perfect for all the Nikon folks who want a camera to start with digital imaging.
Wait ? may be.4. From : G.Speiling (next_sparwl@hotmail.com)

Non Autofocus focus lenses with AI-, AI-S, or Series E Nikkor Or even AI modified-spec Nikkor for D200 was explained as below:- AF=Not possible; Manual Focus: POSSIBLE; M (with electronic Rangefinder as focus aid: works with lenses of maximum aperture of f/5.6 or faster.
Exposure Modes: Progam AE/Shutter Priority AE NOT possible; Aperture Priority AE and MANUAL are possible and If maximum aperture is specified using Non-CPU Lens Data option in shooting menu, aperture value will be displayed in viewfinder and control panel (biggest difference with other entry level DSLRs)
Metering: 3D Matrix Metering NOT possible; Color Matrix: Can be used only if lens focal length and maximum aperture are specified using Non-CPU Lens Data option in shooting menu. Use spot or center-weighted metering if desired results are not achieved in this color matrix mode. Using Spot and Center Weighted Metering: For improved precision, specify lens focal length and maximum aperture using Non-CPU Lens Data option in shooting menu.
Overall, Nikon just wants everyone to use the new AF Nikkor lenses as they provide the best combo for the DSLRs in full scale system compatibility. So, using your older lenses with thsoe specified bodies are not their priority. Come to think of it, the non AF lenses were probably here for last 20 years, they have some basis for not supporting them but it does has a path if you still need to use them onto the latest DSLRs.5. Just curious: Is that possible to use a Makinon Ai Nikkor for a Nikon D200? I like the lens. The earlier post by someone has suggested it has limitation but the D200 has a wider compatibility (read from Dpreview). But I am not so sure yet.

I've had Nikon Fs since the '70s, and most of my non-normal prime lenses have always been Vivitars, which have worn out over the years. Several years ago, I added an FE2 to the kit. Recently, I picked up an EM for the compact size. Because used Nikon lenses have become so cheap, because of so many people trading in film gear for digital, I've been buying up nice Nikon optics. Knowing that pre-AI lenses supposedly can't be used with later bodies, I've been buying AI lenses, since they're compatible with my older Nikons as well as the later ones I have.
One of the Vivitar lenses in Nikon mount I have which isn't worn out is a 28mm f/2.5 from about 1975. I've compared it to the AI lenses I have, and no part of it sticks out past the mount lugs themselves. It's certainly shallower than any AI mount lens I've compared it to. I can't see how it could possibly hit anything inside the mirror box, since there's nothing there.
Since a comparable Nikon lens is still pretty expensive, and new Vivitars, Sigmas, etc that fast are still not particularly cheap, I'd really like to be able to avoid having to buy another lens just for the FE2 and EM bodies to use.
So, my question is, does the pre-AI lens prohibition for AI bodies hold true for every pre-AI Nikon F mount lens, or is that just a general rule of thumb which applies to most of them?
I also have a Zeiss Sonnar 180mm f/2.8 in non-AI Nikon mount, originally designed for medium format, which has absolutely nothing protruding beyond the bayonet lugs, and I have a Nikkor-Q 200mm f/4 which only has a slightly raised lip behind the mount. I'd really like to be able to use them with the TTL metering of the later bodies. Is this possible?7. From : L. BASS (saxotone@rogers.vcom)

I sent this message on the T-90 site; but probably should have asked the question here. I find my Canon FD 35-105 fixed 3.5 very, heavy. What would be the best short tele zoom in the 28/35-85/90 range. For example the Tokina ATX 28-85 or the Vivitar Series 1, 28-90. Also how would the Canon FD 35-105 3.5-4.5 compare to the previously mentioned zoom lenses? Thanks.8. From : Dabn (answer@yourQtion.om)

Hi zN:
I'm not an authority on the D40, but my understanding is that manual focus lenses will mount on Nikon DSLRs but, in models below the D200, will not permit light meter function of any kind.
Perhaps someone with personal experience with that model can either verify this or correct my error.10.
