Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Hi Ron:
Seriously? You've heard people "slam" the 500/8 and 1000/11 Nikkors? Who in the world are you hanging out with? I'm not a big zoom fan, but I seriously doubt that Nikon made much cheap junk in the 200-600mm range in those either.2. From : Tanya (schmeltzer@gmail.com)

I got a camera that was passed down to me by my grandfather. It is a Nikon F2, the lens says it is a micro auto PC 55mm 3.5. Can anyone tell me the value of this camera? This guy told me it wasn't worth $80. Am I getting ripped off?
Thanks.

If I can ask a simple question....I collect older Nikkor Lenses and enjoy them greatly....I shoot with the D7000, D300s and D90.....The question is, Why do so many people slam lenses like the 200-600mm Zoom, 500mm f8, 1000mm f11? Yes, they are slow and all of that, but I use them all the time and seem to get really nice results....I am not a pro....I simply love photography and wonder why it gets so opinionated? (Of course, in the world of Pro Audio it's the same way.and That IS my profession) Maybe the whole world is really getting that way.....OK..thanx, and I hope people don't BodySlam me to the ground for this question........4. Thomas,
Don't knock the cheaper 'D' series Nikon lenses - they are there for a very valid purpose and that is to allow the beginner to see the results of the Nikon optical formulations. The manufacturer then hoping that this will lead to a lifelong affair with Nikon lens of a more robust build.
I am also somewhat surprised that people buy these lenses with the intention of using them on none autofocus bodies - no manufacturer produces cheap autofocus lenses that manually focus with precision - the cost remit does not allow this option5. From : a nielsen (anielsen76@yahoo.com)

I have the Nikon Zoom-Nikkor 35-70 f/3.3-4.5 zoom lens with macro capability and love it. It is a very handy high quality lens and I do not regret purchasing it with a Nikon FG some years ago as a Christmas gift for my wife. I also have a Nikon 35-80 f/4-5.6 'D' series zoom (designed for autofocus) that I bought because it was inexpensive. What a mistake. The mount is plastic (!!) and it just has an overall 'cheap' feel to it. I use it with a manual focus Nikon body (FM) but it is much harder to focus precisely and the lens barrel rotates as it is focused..a definite problem if using a circular polarizer. Not one of my wiser lens purchases. I also have a Nikkor 50 mm f/1.8 normal lens which is my favorite, and a 28 mm E Series which is a decent lens also. Nikon optics are great (also the E series) but the more recent 'inexpensive' series in my opinion are junk. Stick with the regular Nikkor lenses.7. From : Glenn Middleton (Glenn.Myddleton@Gmail.com)

For the sake of absolute accuracy one should be aware that the designation S.S C. - Super Spectral Coating - was only ever used on the 'Breech Lock" Fd lenses. When the new FD series came out the S.C. and S.S.C. designations were dropped. Of all the 55mm F1.2 S.S.C. lenses produced, the Aspherical version introduced in 1973 is the best performer at large apertures - usability at maximum aperture is the only reason to fork out large amounts of cash on a lens, otherwise save your hard earned.
You should be aware that if the aperture mechanism has been fully disassembled, the actual aperture values will not agree with the engraved figures unless the laid down set up procedure was followed.

Hi Bob
I can help with your lens. The Canon 55mm F1.2 is the fastest lens canon ever made for the FD mount. you can trust the readings but mine overexposes a little the old mount lenes had a little green circle past F22 or 16 that's the auto setting if your lens has the chrome button it will be an A and there's a little button that you push while turning and it will lock so you have to push it to take it off auto also and S S C was the best lens besides an L or Floriude I hope this helped9. Hello All
I just bought a used Nikon BR-4 Auto Ring. I've been trying to mount it. I'm afraid of damaging the rear of the lens or the ring. Does anyone know where I can find instructions for installing it? Or explain exactly how to do it?
Thank you very much, JD10. I just bought a Nikon 50-135 zoom which I see you have on your site, but I did not get any owner's manual with it. I was hoping someone who has this lens could e-mail me the optical diagram of the lens. It's a 16 element design and optics has always fascinated me. Thanks in advance. Regards, Gerry
