Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..
Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. Mark Hanna, I don't know if this is the piece you are looking for but Brooklyn Camera Exchange has an FD to EOS Adapter in new condition for $59. Go to: http://www.brooklyncam.com/inventory/canon.shtml#fd I don't know anything about the adapter, but have dealt with Brooklyn Camera Exchange before and found their condition description to be accurate. If its the piece you're looking for let us know how it works out. TomR.3. From : Dave Heinzel (dave@daveheinzel.com)

Hi- I've got an older Vivitar wide angle 28mm lens that had focus problems, becoming unable to focus on subjects further than a few feet away. I disassembled the lens and corrected the problem, and also was lucky enough to fix a problem with the aperature. However, I have one piece of the lens that I cannot seem to put back on. It is the front ring with the focus numbers on it, and I cannot figure out how it connects to the metal focus slider "thing" that turns.
I know, I took it apart so I should have figured it out then. But it came off rather easily, and I was hoping that if anybody knows how to solve this mystery, they might be able to save me a headache or two before I throw this thing as far out my window as it will fly. Thanks- Dave Heinzel Springfield, Illinois4. From : Lindy (adkinstone@earthlink.net)

Canon made 2 FD/EOS converters. I owned both and sold both as on lot on ebay 1+ years ago. I got top dollar for the pair when I got $650 for them both. One has optics that enable infinity focus with just 10 or so FD lenses and mostly L Seriestelephotos including a couple zooms like the 85-300. It enlarges the image by 1.26X. It looks simlar to the 1.4X converter in that its front element is raise out ahead of the mount, thus limiting the lenses it will work with The second converter is a macro unit. No glass. Enables you to use FD bellows with FD macro lenses. The first glass converter was not sold to the public, but instead just to accredited professionals according to Bob Shell's Canon Compendium. I agree that the best way to use FD lenses is with a FD camera. The glass converter I had, had a serial number near the 2000th unit, so they are out there if you MUST get one. Lindy5. Hanna - There exist som few rare converters made special for the more expensive long lenses. I don't think the are suited for regular normal lenses or zooms. They steel light, and alter focusdistance. I don't think they work automaticly as with an FD camera. I will advice you rather to buy a good used FD camera (Canon A1, AE-1, AV-1, AT-1....T70 or T90) They will handlle the FD-lens far better, and will probably cost half of what you'll have to pay for a FD-EF converter - if you find one (E-bay??)

Can anyone help me understand the markings on a 28-85mm FD lens? Between 7m and infinity is a broad "L" shaped mark. The infinity mark doesn't line up with the main index mark, but hovers over another scale, in red, that shows focal length. What does it all mean? Is there any way to extrapolate hyperfocal distances from this ?8. From : Mark Hanna (mhanna@noao.edu)

KEn, The aperture blades on an FD lens won't close down if the lens is not mounted on the camra body, or if the camera is not in stopped down mode. Mount the lens, put the camera in stopped down mode and then see if the blades close. Let us know what happens. Good luck, TomR.10. Greetings, I have two FD lenses where the aperture ring does not operate properly (aperture ring moves but does not change opening). Are there repair manuals etc. for these lenses? I would prefer trying to repair them myself. Regards. Ken
