Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. Are we sure any FD400/4.5 can't use the extender? Look at the picture of the mount here:
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fdlenses/400mm.htm#f4.5
The baffle is no longer rectangular, but has a shape that is the combination of a rectangle and a circle. Mine is the same, and was never machined, but I have not an 1.4x to test with. The circular apertuse size is comparable with my 300/4. Sometimes leaflet may have been printed before newer lenses became available.

If you read the Canon instruction leaflet for the FD 1.4X extender, you will see that the 400/f4.5 lens is not the only FD lens that this extender will not fit, due to the rear rectangular baffle plate. However, the 400/f4.5 is the only lens that Canon state cannot be modified by removing the said baffle. They offered a modification service for the other lenses, especially the L series. I seem to recall that the baffle on the 800mm L series was easy to remove. For anybody interested, Christian Rollinger's Canon FD site contains the aforesaid instruction leaflet

Thank you for posting the helpful information about Canon FD tele-extenders. As I read the pages, I observed the statement that the FD 1.4X-A extender can be used with ALL FD lenses 300mm or greater. Unfortunately, because it would be a useful combination, the 1.4X-A will not work with the FD 400mm f4.5 lens. The lens has a masking plate at its rear which prevents the protruding lens system of the extender from being mounted. I hope this comment will be helpful to some. Regards, Greg

Hi Arthur: It's kind of 1/4 true. The mount is not the same, but you can use OM lenses with an adapter which is not expensive. You can also use them on the Canon EOS series cameras with a similar adapter.

In both cases, you lose automatic diaphragm operation, and, of course, autofocus, but the lenses work well otherwise. The light meter works in both Manual and aperture-priority Automatic modes. The adapters are simple metal bayonet rings without any glass compensating elements in them, so no quality is lost in using the OM lenses.

Dear All, this board is lovely and useful. I do have a question, i.e. I was told the OM/Zuiko (I have a OM3 and OM10QD) lenses are not usable with the new E digital system, is that true ?

Canon Pro1, I like the camera which carries with a very useful 28-200mm (7.2 x 50.8mm) zoom lens and deliver approx 8 mega pixels. RAW mode and a very useful ASA50 are offered. Probably it is the only Canon digital compact that designed with a L-spec zoom lens. Actually, I was tempted to create a site for this favourite of D-compact mine earlier but someone has pointed me to a very good site and thus, I gave up the idea citing I don't intend to replicate similar resources on the web. You can try http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/pro1.html to find out how others felt. BUT- there are a few not favorable areas with the Pro1. The lens focus with a lot of noise (if you can live with this, that is fine). The MACRO will only provide a so-so range of approx. 2272 x 1704 pixels. But I enjoy the manual zooming control (which operates like an analogue camera/zoom), low light gathering maximum aperture of f/2.4 (W)~ f/3.5 (T), vari-angled LCD (a very useful feature the new Canon G9 missed) and ASA50 it offers. Further, the camera is very well designed/built and had survived a few hard drops. The 7X optical zoom consists of two Aspherical elements, one UD-glass element and one Fluorite crystal element. To summarize how I felt with this camera:- I bought my first unit for my office back in 2004. Bought another last year (used, but halved the original price I paid for), not many camera can actually can tempt me to invest again with the same model/spec... how I wish it can be upgraded as a 12 mega pixels capacity where I don't mind to get another unit for personal use. But the operational noise when the zoom hunts for focus must seriously be improved first. I overheard Canon will not be upgrading the model as prices of DSLR range has came down to a state which makes Pro1 not viable commercially for Canon, SAD.

After 1977/8, virtually all Nikon SLRs introduced were deployed with full aperture metering. Stopped Down Metering were used only when 1) older Non-Ai lenses are used with the new bodies (Ai) to achieve metering correctly. When you perform stopped down with Ai Nikon cameras, metering/exposure guide will not be correct. 2) when you intend to use attachment units such as older Bellows / Extension Sets which do not have a direct coupling with the camera's lens mount, stopped down metering is often used to get an exposure guide. So, it is not advisable to perform Stop Down Metering with any Ai Nikon body, meaning, the exposure it provides is not accurate.

Dear Rick. I read your answer to the "Stop-Down-Metering". What if I stopped down in a FM2N ? Does the exposure are the same ? I measure it is different.

I was offered this Canon 8mp PRO ONE digital compact. I was attracted to the L-Zoom lens (28-200mm). I have not heard a compact digital which uses a Canon L-series zoom. Anyone had experience with it ? Is it worth or comparable to 35mm Canon L lens quality ?
