Sometimes we all become too interested in the camera body because that is where most of the gadgets are. But it is the lens that makes the picture and most often the lens has a more direct influence on the eventual image quality 'output'. If economy is a consideration, you should consider buy a less expensive camera body rather than less expensive lenses. If you buy a SLR camera with only one lens is also not logical because you might as well buy a cheaper camera with a fixed, non-interchangeable lens like a P&S. But modern lenses has such fantastic features such as high power zoom with previously unimaginable zoom range which actually makes a single-lens-do-all photographic system viable. All those messages posted on the variuos Message Boards for SLR Models are not short of interesting comment and remarks on lenses. Well, not to confuse others who are just interested in cameras, I thought there is a neccessity for a separate Message Board for those who are interested in discussion on various issues on lenses as well..

Unlike the Message designed for camera of various makes, this MB is one-for-all type and thus I hope this section can be maintained as a peaceful zone. The maintainer of this site reserved all the right to censor or even delete any un-related, excessively hostile messages posted herein. This site is specifically created just for lenses. If your intention is to dispose your optics or looking for any used unit, please use the Free Trade Zone site instead. The Photography In Malaysia has no Guestbook on its own, because it is an integral part of the MIR site. I have inherited a older model Nikon FM2 Camera, with Nikon Series E 50mm 1:8 lens, nikkor zoom 70-210mm 1:4 and nikkor 28mm 1:2 600462 lens. Would I be able to reuse these lenses or would they be compatible with a new Nikon D90 digital camera body? Any help would be appreciated since I'm new to Digital Cameras.
Thanks,
De

Hi,

The lens designated as being NewFD canon FD 500mm f/4.5L actually is the Breech Lock older version of the lens as the NewFD version has a black mount-ring, the original version has the chrome-like colored mount-ring.

Minor but still.

Best regards en good luck with this wonderfull website!

Ray

Hi Alan:

I don't know of any issues with mercury in the camera. It did originally use mercury batteries, which are no longer available; modern replacements include zinc/air, which is a good match for the original mercury cell, and silver, which require a correction such as the CRIS CR9 adapter. The mercury problem with the batteries was not so much leakage in use as what happens when they accumulate in landfills.

As far as the camera itself, though, I don't know where any mercury would come from.

Unless I am wrong, the FTN meter head has a cadmium sulfie (CDS) cell. Yet i sold a camera to someone in Hong Kong who's giving me a song and dance about mercury, but not mercury batteries, leaking. I'm at a loss to figure out what he's talking about Can anyone help?

Shawn,
Presuming by 'S.C' you mean a breech lock lens, it is possible that the wrong type of lens cap or an after market item has been fitted. The outer diameter of the cap should be completely smooth and after rotating the breech ring the cap should just lift out. It is just possible that the cap is damaged where it locates on the locating stud on the rear of the breech mount - this means that the cap can rotate with the breech ring and the cap lugs will not align with the cut outs in the breech ring. You will need to look at the ring cut outs after rotating the ring and see if the three plastic lugs are completely visible in the cut outs - if not hold the breech ring and rotate the cap until you can pull the lugs through the cut outs. One should also note that the lugs on the correct cap have a 'wedge' shape, this is so the breech ring will tighten down on the cap and secure it. On well used caps it is possible that the 'wedges' get very worn and the cap can 'jump' over the locating lug when the ring is initially turned to secure the cap. In this instance remove the screw located on the side of the breech ring and unscrew the ring until you can wiggle the cap free. If you do this carefully and count the rotations you should be able to retain the original lock up on the mount, if you have to remove the breech ring completely then it is a bit of trial and error on the camera before you refit the lock screw. Do not over tighten the lock screw as the threads strip very easily.

If you are referring to a nFD lens, then remove the three radial screws that hold the stainless lug ring into the rear of the mount and pull the cap and ring off the lens barrel, then replace the stainless ring back into the rear of the lens. Note that the three retaining screws will be very tight and will require a correctly fitting screwdriver if damage to the heads is to be avoided.

I've got a Canon 28mm 1:2.8 S.C. lense with one problem, the rear lense cap is stuck on it. Does anyone know any tricks to cause it to release? I'd really appreciate some help if at all possible.

Thanks in advance.
