The Canon T-90 System

Modern Classic SLRs Series :
Canon T-90 - Message Board/Guestbook

The Canon T-90 was the last model that uses FD-mount prior to the shift to the autofocus EF EOS system. It hardly lasted a year since its inception but what an impact it has created on the design of future SLR. Every inch a classic, despite after more than 15 years, this camera is still hard to replicate even by today's standard. It was also widely acclaimed as one of the true Classic camera of modern times. Here comes a common Message Board designed specifically for Canon T90 SLR model - this is especially useful when you realize ALL Canon FD mount SLRs have long been discontinued you may require a public forum for common support and sharing mutual knowledge or experience among many of you. This Site has proved to be quite popular and I am quite happy to see these effort was not wasted and special thanks to ALL the volunteered Site Maintainers of this Message Board. Enjoy.

Re: Polarizer for T-90. Here's my understanding. The T-90 has two meter sensors: partial and CW are located in the pentaprism, and spot is located behind the mirror and reads off the film plane. Since it is the interference of the light passing through the mirror that is thrown off by a linear polarizer, you could use one only with partial and CW metering. If you use spot metering, you must use a cicrular polarizer. Obviously, a CP will work fine with partial and CW, therefore is your best overall choice. Someone please correct me if I've got this wrong. Ken

In repsonse to Medhi and Metz flashes...

Dear Medhi, I've got the same problems! I've got a Metz Mecblitz 40 MZ-2 and I want to use it with a T90. I've got the SCA3102 converter to use with an EOS. You can get full TTL control with that EOS cameras using that converter. If you go to the Metz web site (www.metz.de) you can navigate to a helpful page. Choose English from the main page (top right). Then look for the flash page, then the SCA adaptor page. You can select the flash you've got and the camera you've got. It will then suggest a converter. For the T90 the converter seems to be the same for all Metz flash units. It's the SCA311. Now, the SCA311 seems to give...

- TTL flash control
- 1st/2nd curtain sync (for slower than 1/45sec!!!??? eh?)
- Slow (slower than 1/90sec) flash sync (with camera in TV mode and aperture set on lens???!!!)

It will certainly not allow TTL fill-in flash. I'm not sure if it will let you got to 1/250sec. I would be reluctant to even test the SCA3102 on the T90. A fired camera might result. This is all very confusing. As far as I can see there have been 3 versions of the Canon TTL flash system. cheers, george.

Jaume - No. The EOS type wireless remote works with an IR or near-IR beam, and the T-90 has no such sensor built-in. There was an IR remote - the LC-2 - produced especially for the T-90 (and maybe others) but it's hard to find I think. Its IR sensor/receiver attached to the camera's hotshoe. Ken

I currently own a Canon AL-1 that I purchased new way back when and am looking at several reasonably priced update options. I've been using the AL-1 for auto racing photography at dirt tracks and made the jump to night photos this summer, not a very easy task for a camera that syncs at 1/60th. The T90 was recommended to me by another racing photographer and works with my FD lenses. The question is that I have a lead on a Sunpak 611 flash unit but I can't find any information on it that verifies whether it would work with the T90. Also, I don't have any idea what type of cables, etc, I would need and if they're even available anymore. The thing that makes the Sunpak attractive is that it has a GN of 160 which would do a better job than my Promaster FTD 5600 hotshoe GN 113. I know that Promaster sells a module for the T90 but a friend offered me the Sunpak 611 for next to nothing. Does anyone here know if the Sunpak 611 will work with the Canon T90, what accessories I would have to buy and where I can get them. Quantum makes battery packs for both flashes but if the Sunpak will work with the T90 I'd prefer the more powerful unit. I know what you're thinking but I can't afford a Norman. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gene, manual mode is the only mode where exposure compensation won't work. You are holding down the exp. comp. button while you turn the input dial? The exp. comp. scale is becoming visible on the LCD? If so, Ken has to be on the right track. Compensation of 1/3 step is visible on slide film. 2/3 step is a lot, a full step is a "special effect." Prints from an automated lab will probably wipe out your compensation.
